Cereals Modeling Manager, Climate Science/Digital Farming Solutions

Position Overview:  

You will lead an interdisciplinary team of scientists researching a diverse suite of projects that draw from millions of acres of on-farm data. The models and insights that your team creates are key to Climate LLC’s digital farming recommendations, using data science to help growers select the best agronomic practices for their fields. Establish the vision and strategy to create value from these models globally, partnering with stakeholders from within different business units across the enterprise. Create and execute plans to deliver these models from concept to production, while helping your team members to develop their careers as part of an inclusive, innovative culture that encourages diverse perspectives. 


What You Will Do: 

  • Manage a team of highly skilled data scientists, setting strategy and promoting individual development 
  • Create and execute plans to deliver the next generation of farmer recommendation models for crop protection in wheat 
  • Explore and potentially expand modeling opportunities on other crops 
  • Leverage relationships to simplify complex strategic issues regarding model assumptions and use, and use your communication skills to articulate solutions  
  • Partner closely with data and engineering teams to ensure the use of high-quality data 
  • Ensure model metrics are aligned with business value for Bayer and our customers, collaborating closely with commercial teams 
  • As a member of the Science Modeling Leadership Team reporting to the Modeling Director, help set strategy for the entire Modeling team, and lead cross-team initiatives 


Basic Qualifications 

  • PhD or MS in a Physical, Mathematical, or Biological Science 
  • 4+ years of post-PhD work experience OR 7+ years of post-MS work experience, including industry experience  
  • 3+ years working with biological or agricultural data 
  • Demonstrated experience translating complex technical concepts to collaborators, decision makers, and non-technical audiences, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Project management and organizational experience 
  • Experience in innovative multi-disciplinary environments, and desire to see ideas realized in practice 
  • 2+ years’ experience in applied data science, with demonstrated examples of initiating and executing projects 
  • Flexibility to work with collaborators in European time zones and team members in US West Coast time zones 


Preferred Qualifications 

  • 2+ years of people management experience, with demonstrated examples of developing others and building team culture 
  • Plant pathology and/or crop protection experience 
  • Experience in European agricultural practices
