Applied Scientist, Geospatial/Remote Sensing

We have an opportunity for an Applied Scientist with a focus on Machine Learning and Geospatial Data in our Data Insights Science group to work with a team of highly experienced remote sensing data scientists to apply geospatial datasets and computing power towards complex environmental and agricultural applications at scale. Your work contributes to the cutting edge capabilities we are building towards global crop and environmental insights.  

What You Will Do:

  • Use remote sensing, weather, grower data, environmental and other geospatial datasets to develop and build large-scale models
  • Work with the massive and complex geospatial dataset in a scientifically robust way focusing on data provenance, quality, traceability, and error propagation 
  • Collaborate with engineering teams working with geospatial platforms to develop and implement models and algorithms at scale
  • Collaborate with product managers to develop new products, feature datasets, and capabilities relevant to the agriculture market
  • Collaborate with scientists across the organization to establish value of derived layers in down steam models to create value for customers
  • Communicate progress to internal and external customers and translate the results of scientific analyses into actionable insights
  • Write beautiful, robust, well-documented and well-tested research code and code libraries

Basic Qualifications:

 -  Master’s degree in a relevant scientific or quantitative discipline (e.g. Geostatistics, Computer Science, Agronomy, Agricultural Science, Crop/Plant Science, Geography, Environmental Science)
 -  Demonstrated background developing statistical, machine learning, and/or simulation models for environmental/agronomical system
 -  Proficiency in Python or in another relevant scientific programming language
 -  Demonstrated experience working with remote sensing and/or geospatial data
 -  Experience implementing complex big data projects with a focus on collecting, parsing, managing, analyzing, and visualizing large sets of data to turn information into insights using multiple platforms
 -  Strong problem solving skills, with the ability to research, develop, and implement solutions to novel problem
 -  Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as within a team

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

 -  Advanced degree (PhD) in a relevant quantitative fields
 -  Demonstrated knowledge of agriculture and/or agriculture oriented businesses
 -  Experience in creating algorithms at large scale against large data stores
 -  Familiarity with cloud-based and/or distributed computing
 -  Experience working with PostgreSQL/PostGIS
 -  Experience writing code in Scala and/or Java
 -  Experience working with and contributing to the open source software community for geospatial software and analysis
 -  Excellent team player skills with high integrity, work ethics, humility, and self-awareness
 -  Excellent ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner
 -  Ability to handle multiple, competing priorities in a fast-paced development environment
