Position Objective

The Operations Manager oversees all field operations to achieve and maintain budgetary, productivity, quality, and safety initiatives. This position will be responsible for leading and promoting continuous improvement initiatives and process improvement techniques.

Job Functions

  • Oversee commercial roofing production, sheet metal and service crews, developing leads, sales efforts, and promoting the departments’ services
  • Communicates on an ongoing basis to stay abreast of potential work opportunities
  • Review bids and specifications and assists estimating staff with estimates. Reviews purchase orders, contracts, and proposals to verify intended scope of work and to assure that company policies are not compromised; coordinate this work with the project manager and his team
  • Oversees and directs efforts of superintendents/foremen on all aspects of project performance, including project commencement, safety, scheduling, production, quality control, and project close out
  • Purchases materials as necessary and maintains department inventory and material delivery slips. Coordinates with the warehouse manager to inventory, rotate and utilize materials & equipment as efficiently as possible
  • Increases profit performance by monitoring labor, material, subcontract and equipment costs. Sets internal goals for measuring project performance daily. Works directly with the project team to overcome project budget challenges, maintain an ongoing, accurate cost-to-complete understanding and eliminate negative budget fade
  • Responsible for daily identification and communication of project scope changes with the project manager. Adheres to company policies that relate to management of change orders, work additional to scope and time and material tickets
  • Provides effective leadership for the production department, i.e. safety-first, quality, teamwork, motivation, and positive employee relations. 
  • Major contributor within the project team in assuring effective, successful execution of all production operations safely, in accordance with budget and to the highest quality
  • Establishes daily expectation and accountability standards for operations personnel. Contributes to weekly project review and monthly financial review meetings
  • Schedules with team and/or performs necessary jobsite visits to every running project. Works with field personnel, customer, other trades etc. to identify issues and potential ways to overcome them. Communicates any resulting scope/schedule/cost changes daily with the project manager

 

 

  • Works with prime and subcontractors on all phases of projects including schedules, change orders, and submittals
  • Directs customer questions, complaints, and requests appropriately.  Performs field inspections and investigations as necessary             
  • Additional duties as required

Role specific goals:

  • Complete and objective assessment of current workforce, taking into account technical abilities, approach to safety, attitude and cost
  • Review of current crew make up. Recommend changes for rebuilding with productivity, quality, teamwork and cost effectiveness being the key focus
  • Utilizing existing established policies/procedures implement clear daily expected behaviors and accountability measures for superintendents, foremen and field workforce
  • Establish workforce performance review process that ensures that all employees receive continuous feedback and assessment based upon safety approach, attitude, quality, reliability and productivity
  • Establish procedures for daily assignment of company vehicles to projects/employees. Responsible for assignment and coordination of all company vehicles and equipment

Knowledge, Skills & Experience (Essential)

  • Five years minimum of commercial roofing industry experience in management is a must with emphasis on all facets of the business including but not limited to customer relations, extensive knowledge of roofing materials, techniques and requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field is preferred, but not required.
  • Other critical skills include planning & organizing; team building, problem identification/ resolution, multi-tasking,  follow-through skills to bring tasks to closure in a timely manner, priority setting, and having a sense of urgency in accomplishing tasks in a timely manner.   
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • High level understanding and use of computer programs – including Internet Explorer, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Internet.

Occupational Health and Safety

  • Identification and reporting of health and safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries and property damage at the workplace

 

Working Conditions

  • Physical surroundings:  Office and field environment with typical office machines and exposure to noise and temperature as well as exposure to typical hazards of jobsite, including ladders, construction materials, etc.  Cannot be afraid of heights/ladder climbing/roof walking.
  • Physical Effort: Extensive sitting, standing, walking.   Repetitive keying, typing.  Occasional lifting, not to exceed 50 pounds.
  • Domestic/International Travel: Local, for purposes of visiting customers and reviewing needs onsite.   Travel out of state for training sessions.
