Director of Software Development
As the Director of Software Development, you will provide leadership to and be responsible for the effective and efficient operation of Corporate Applications services including custom and packaged applications covering a range of business functions including Finance, HR, Recruitment, Payroll, Sales, Expenses, etc. You will demonstrate a hands-on, high energy work ethic and championing a team-player attitude. You will direct the application operations and software development services according to agile build and release management practices and leveraging contemporary software development tools for configuration and release management. You will direct the continued evolution of cloud-based development automation including continuous integration, continuous delivery, microservices architecture, automated unit testing/test coverage, AWS, containerization, Overseeing the analysis, development, testing, implementation, and support of custom developed applications and automation platforms. You will provide guidance and direction to teams (both direct and indirect) supporting technical services required to operate cloud-based automation testing services for regression, performance, integration testing, and security testing (DevSecOps) including self-discovery capability. You will direct and operate custom and platform-based automation services for internal and client-facing use cases partnering with Data Science staff members. This includes the exploration and rapid-prototyping of scripting, RDA, and RPA services as well as evolving and extending these services to ML and AI capabilities longer term. You will identify and influence the process improvement opportunities within the business and within corporate applications services to improve overall company efficiency. You will adhere to discipline project execution practices including defining, planning and directing the execution of a broad range of technical projects while balancing the competing demands of scope, time, cost, quality, resources, and project and operational risks. You will guide analyst and developments if effective requirements gathering practices from departments throughout the company, and ensure these teams properly log, access, and analyze the data that they need to make regular decisions. You will advise the IT executive management team in setting direction, finding solutions to address business opportunities and challenges, and providing feedback on projects to the business in a timely fashion. You will develop and report regularly on leading data indicators (KPIs) of current and future IT application operations and business performance. You will ensure effective mechanisms to balance and measure performance to project workload across application support and development team members. You will ensure software development and application support staff retain contemporary skills, project delivery excellence, and high-quality deliverables by providing regular training and reinforcing a collaborative, team-based service delivery model. This role requires a high degree of collaboration with smart, passionate business-minded leaders across the organization. Business process and technology acumen combined with an ability to build relationships, influence, bring a value-add perspective and to deliver quality solutions on time will be keys to your success.
So, what is it we’re looking for? Let’s talk about numbers. We need someone with over 8 years of experience in application services management including 5 years of experience leading a software development team through multiple product/platform releases. Plus 5 years of experience making a significant individual contribution to real-world software development is also needed.
We need someone with a Master’s Degree in Computer Science and has demonstrated proficiency with an object-oriented programming language; strong object-oriented design and algorithmic analysis background. Someone with a track record of developing IT staff through various career stages and building high-performance teams. Someone with excellent written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences. We also need someone with experience in leading teams in the operation and delivery of automation bots via both commercial automation platforms (eg Automation Anywhere, BluePrism, UIPath, etc) as well as within custom developed automation frameworks.
What else? We need someone who’s experienced in using an iterative process such as SCRUM to deliver software projects; experience in continuous improvement to the development process. Someone with familiarity with cloud computing specifically AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google. Someone with experience building scalable, available, and low-latency systems. Someone with experience using functional programming languages. Someone with knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operation. Someone with the ability to forecast and manage a team and services portfolio to an operational budget. Someone with the ability to take a project from scoping requirements through actual launch of the project.
