Role Overview

Heavy Duty Mechanics at Gibraltar Mine are responsible for maintaining and repairing a large fleet of open pit mining equipment, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation. This role involves working on some of the largest mining equipment in Canada and requires strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and teamwork skills.

Core Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair open pit mining equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and heavy-duty electrical systems
  • Support planned maintenance, component replacements, and major equipment overhauls
  • Work collaboratively with operations and maintenance teams to meet production targets.
  • Mentor apprentices and contribute to a strong team environment.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to safety and environmental standards.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • valid driver’s license.
  • Interprovincial Red Seal Certification in Heavy Duty Mechanics.

Skills & Competencies

  • Experience maintaining large-scale open pit mining equipment, including:
  • Komatsu 930E haul trucks
  • Electric rope shovels (Bucyrus 495HR and P&H 2800 and 4100 series)
  • Electric rotary drills (Cat 49HR and P&H 320XPC)
  • Large dozers (Cat D10 and D11, Liebherr 776, Komatsu D375)
  • Production loaders (Cat 994 and Komatsu 1200)
  • Large graders (Komatsu 955-7, Cat 24M and 16M)
  • Strong understanding of hydraulic, mechanical, and heavy-duty electrical systems
  • Experience with diesel engines including Cummins and Detroit Diesel
  • Proven troubleshooting and diagnostic ability in a production environment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment

Assets

  • Experience working on electric rope shovels and rotary drills
  • Previous open pit mining experience in a large-scale operation
  • Experience supporting major component replacements and overhauls
