Job Title: Metallurgical Lab Tech I

Department: Tech Services

Reports to: Senior Metallurgist

Location: Florence, AZ

 

Job Summary:

The Metallurgical Lab Technician I assists in performing sample testing, analysis, and basic laboratory tasks to support operations SXEW, copper leaching operations, and process optimization projects. The technician ensures accuracy, safety, and compliance with all procedures required to maintain consistent quality of test results.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Sample Collection & Preparation:

         Collect/receive, sort and log samples from designated areas or field teams.

         Prepare samples for analysis, including drying, blending, compositing, and other methods, as needed.

Laboratory Testing & Analysis:

  • Conduct basic chemical and physical testing on mineral, solution and cathode samples under supervision to optimize plant performance.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as scales, sieves, XRF, pH/ORP/conductivity meters, splitters, blenders, reagent feeders, etc.
  • Perform pilot and bench-scale testing, including set up and operation of leach columns, bottle rolls, and other methods.

Data Entry & Reporting:

         Enter test data into laboratory information systems accurately.

  • Assist with report preparation and data compilation for review by senior lab staff.
  • Quality Control & Safety Compliance:
  • Follow all quality assurance protocols to ensure reliable and consistent results.
  • Adhere strictly to laboratory health and safety standards, including use of PPE.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training as required.

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Perform routine cleaning, calibration and maintenance of lab equipment.
  • Assist with inventory and procurement of spare parts and supplies for metallurgical lab equipment.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions to the lab supervisor or maintenance department.

Continuous Improvement:

         Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and accuracy in lab processes.

         Participate in training to enhance knowledge of lab procedures and equipment.

         Other duties, as required.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED is required; bachelor’s degree in science, metallurgical/chemical engineering, or a related field is preferred.

 

Experience:

         One year lab experience required. Additional experience in a lab or mining setting (chemical handling, sampling, analysis, data logging) experience is preferred.

         Knowledge of basic lab safety protocols is preferred.

         Skills:

         Attention to detail with strong organizational skills.

         Must be able to manage time, set priorities and manage multiple tasks.

         Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.

         Must be proficient with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

         Proficient in basic math and data entry.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move samples or equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable standing for extended periods and working in a mining lab environment.

 

Working Conditions: This position may involve exposure to dust, noise, copper processing chemicals, and fieldwork. Compliance with safety guidelines and protective equipment (hard hat, glasses, goggles, hard toe boots, respirator) use is mandatory. Must be able to work in a dynamic, stressful environment. This position will have a dayshift-based work schedule, including weekend coverage and, as-needed holiday coverage.
