LABORATORY OPERATIONS TECHNICIAN (PART-TIME, CONTRACT - ONSITE)

Position Overview:
Sutro Biopharma Inc. is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive part-time contract Laboratory Operations Technician to support critical lab operations at our facility. This role is essential to maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient scientific workspace.  This onsite position will perform services including glassware processing, inventory management, environmental health and safety checks, coordination of vendor visits, and logistical support such as mail and supplies distribution.
 
Responsibilities:
 
Glass Washing & Autoclaving
  • Collect and transport glassware and plasticware for washing.
  • Wash, sterilize, and autoclave labware per customer specifications.
  • Deliver cleaned/sterilized glassware to designated lab areas within 4–8 business hours.
  • Recommend glassware replenishment needs.
  • Safely operate autoclaves, dryers, and ovens following SOPs and best practices.
  • Complete documentation and log accurately and on time.
  • Maintain cleanliness and readiness of the glassware area in compliance with health and safety policies.
Lab Supplies & Inventory Management
  • Perform weekly inventory cycle counts for 11 Point-of-Use (POU) and stockroom locations.
  • Manage inventory levels, reordering as needed based on reorder points.
  • Receive new inventory and stock shelves.
  • Record inventory transactions in inventory management and ERP systems.
  • Maintain “grab-and-go” accessibility in all storage areas.
EH&S Preventive Maintenance
  • Conduct monthly inspections of:
    • 62 fire extinguishers (with tag updates and CMMS entry).
    • 23 eyewash and safety shower stations (cleaning, flow testing, cap inspections, temperature checks).
    • 12 First Aid Kits (inspect and replenish as needed, update CMMS).
  • Ensure consistent compliance with EH&S standards.
Coordinator Responsibilities
  • Manage lab equipment preventive maintenance (PM) schedules.
  • Schedule vendor visits and escort engineers on site.
  • Log maintenance/calibration reports in the CMMS.
  • File physical documentation.
  • Decommission assets as required.
  • Assist in procurement tasks by drafting purchase requisitions.
  • Respond to support tickets (Zendesk platform).
  • Post calendar events for facilities activities and company-wide activities.
Shipping, Receiving & General Services
  • Handle daily mail distribution for four mail rooms and manage outgoing mail.
  • Maintain stock levels at coffee stations (4 locations) and snack area (1 location).
  • Provide support for additional tasks as assigned.
 
Qualifications: 
  • Familiarity with lab equipment, autoclaves, EH&S standards, and inventory systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks independently.
  • Experience with ERP systems and CMMS platforms a plus.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Primarily in a laboratory and facility support setting.
  • May involve lifting (up to 40 lbs.), standing for extended periods, and working around lab equipment and sterilization equipment.

Education/Experience: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent; college coursework in a scientific or technical field preferred.
  • 1–2 years of experience in a laboratory support, facilities, or inventory management role.

The anticipated salary range for fully qualified candidates applying for this role at Sutro Biopharma’s California based locations will be $60,000 - $66,000 (no bonus, equity, and benefits). The base salary offered will vary depending on the market, job-related knowledge, skills and capabilities, and experience.
