The Department of History, Language, and Global Culture (HLGC) at Suffolk University invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position in Global History at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2025 in the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS). We seek a teacher-scholar with research foci in Global history, Public History, and Digital Humanities. The department is particularly interested in recruiting a teacher scholar who can demonstrate experience executing a cross-cultural research agenda, documenting the histories of marginalized communities in Global History.  Candidates able to contribute to an evolving specialization in public history, digital humanities, and integration of innovative technologies (i.e. AR/VR, ArcGIS, game design technologies) in an interdisciplinary context are especially encouraged.  Ph.D. candidates in History, Global Studies, Women & Gender Studies, Black Studies, Latin American Studies or related fields are enthusiastically welcomed.

 

Candidates should provide evidence of commitment to excellent teaching and scholarly potential, including a research agenda and plans for peer-reviewed publication.  Candidates should be broadly trained to teach courses across the department curriculum in research methods, professional skills building, and at the introductory, upper, and capstone levels including courses supporting the University’s first year and general education program.  The successful candidate will propose new courses that address the interdisciplinary relationship between Global History, Public History, and World Culture and it is preferable that candidates possess knowledge of world languages; demonstration of an interdisciplinary orientation in scholarship and teaching is preferredThe successful candidate will support the department’s redesign and reinvigoration of its course offerings to emphasize a deeper commitment to interdisciplinarity, especially in the popular programs of Public History and Global & Cultural Studies, and will have the opportunity to contribute to the already-established Bialystok Cemetery Restoration project, Summer Public History Institute, and emerging partnership with the new Holocaust Museum & Education Center set to open in Boston in 2026 to create meaningful experiential and professional development opportunities for our students.  In addition to demonstrating excellence in teaching and research, the successful candidate is expected to advise and mentor undergraduates from a variety of disciplines and fields of interest within the department, and engage in service with the department, college and university.  The workload for this position is 45% teaching, 35% research, and 20% service with a 5-course teaching load per year.

 

Suffolk’s History, Language & Global Culture Department is comprised of faculty who are actively engaged in scholarship in a variety of disciplines.  They publish monographs with leading academic presses and articles with peer reviewed journals, secure fellowships at distinguished research institutions and archives, and lead disciplinary organizations regionally and internationally.  Department faculty take advantage of our location in the heart of Boston, home to leading historical, cultural and research institutions and organizations and an extensive network of historical interpretive sites (with Suffolk alumni employees), and community partners to advance our work as teacher-scholars and integrate experiential learning, service learning, and applied learning into our classrooms. 

The successful candidate will contribute to a rich tradition of community-engaged teaching and experiential education that prepares our diverse, substantially first-generation college students—40% of whom are Pell eligible—for careers and civic engagement. The successful candidate will have a commitment to inclusive pedagogy and curricular diversity, mentoring and advising students—especially first-generation college students—as well as conducting impactful research. 

We seek candidates excited about centering best practices pedagogy focused on active, applied and experiential learning in their teaching; a commitment to ongoing and continuous improvement in teaching is expected.  Familiarity with and experience using pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, socio-economic, and ability groups to reach their maximum potential is a valuable qualification.

Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant field (History, Global Studies, Women & Gender Studies, Black Studies, Latin American Studies or related field) by the beginning of the 2025-2026 academic year; ABD candidates in the final stages of completing their degrees will be considered.  Experience teaching undergraduate students preferred.  Application should be made through the Suffolk University Human Resources’ Careers at Suffolk  site.
