OUR OPPORTUNITY
Govan Brown is looking for a Payroll Specialist to oversee the administration of our payroll and benefits program for employees across Canada. Reporting directly to the Senior Corporate Controller, our Payroll Specialist will leverage critical thinking and a process-driven mindset to contribute to the continuous improvement of Govan Brown’s payroll and benefits functions. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Manage the payroll process for 250 union and non-union employees located in multiple provinces across Canada, using ADP Workforce Now.
  • Setup employees on ADP Workforce Now and Oracle HR Hub.
  • Oversee full cycle benefits administration (including RRSP, benefits enrollment, etc) for all employees, in collaboration with third party providers, allocating cost to various internal cost centres.
  • Administer employee share purchase program including share vesting, tax calculations and reporting.
  • Administer accurate expatriate payroll for employees on temporary assignment from our US business units.
  • Manage the billing and reconciliation process for the benefits program.
  • Prepare comprehensive payroll and benefits related reports for distribution to the management and executive leadership teams.
  • Ensure all payroll deductions are correct (statutory deductions, garnishments, family support, benefits, pension, union dues, etc.).
  • Prepare any required records of employment, employment letters, T2200’s for applicable employees, and assist employees with payroll related inquiries, resolve discrepancies as necessary.
  • Assist ADP with Year end reconciliation process, prepare and distribute T4’s and liaison with ADP to troubleshoot payroll system problems.
  • Oversee all relevant period end activities including but not limited to journal entries, GL reconciliations, reporting, government remittances (like EHT) in addition to quarterly and annual returns.
  • Ensure compliance with the collective agreement and all federal and provincial legislature and regulations.
  • Perform internal audits of payroll and timesheets in assurance of accuracy and compliance.
  • Work with Finance department to ensure proper tracking of car allowances and vehicle taxable benefits for applicable employees.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement of processes and practices.
  • Provide guidance to employees and managers on matters related to payroll, benefits and leave management.
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience processing payroll in a small or mid-sized organization.
  • Working knowledge of ADP Workforce Now.
  • Solid understanding of payroll legislation for all provinces across Canada.
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation is a strong asset.
  • Experience processing payroll for unionized employees.
  • Experience processing payroll for expatriate employees is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of RRSP/DPSP and Employee Stock Purchase Program administration.
  • Experience in the construction industry is an asset.
  • High level of computer proficiency with Microsoft Office suite especially MS Excel.
  • Strong detail orientation with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Confident with the ability to communicate effectively and build credibility with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative, be proactive and resourceful.
  • Positive spirit with a “get ‘er done” attitude and ability to thrive in a very dynamic environment.
YOUR WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT
  • Primary work location is 108 Vine Avenue, Toronto.
  • In-office. This is not a hybrid or remote role.
