Role

If you’re a data scientist with an ambition to apply your trade to marketing, this is the role for you. Imagine what you could do at Splunk, the Data to Everything company. We’re looking for someone who is ready to partner with our Marketing Theater Operations leads to build a system based model for marketing planning and ongoing tracking against the plan’s targets to surface run rate gaps, funding gaps and potential misalignments among the plan’s components early. This is your chance to make a mega impact. Ideally you’d be located on the West Coast of the US. This internship will report to the Sr. Director Global Marketing Theater Operations, a function responsible for cadence, data insights and partnering with each global theatre’s marketing team to help define the marketing strategy based on data driven analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Plan the effort: Responsible for the documented planning of your project from its current state to delivery of business benefits.
  • Tool selection:  The intern will help select in short order a suitable platform or tool to develop and manage an outcome backwards, numbers based, global model of the marketing plan
  • Model building: With input and guidance from the Global Marketing Theater Operations team you will create an end to end model that ties together data from all marketing and GTM functions; you will work with marketing leaders to identify and document major levers, use existing data to validate suitability and predictability of levers, and use them to plan cost/benefit. You will create training and documentation for marketing, sales and product groups to understand the marketing levers and your model.
  • Testing: You will test your model with real data and scenarios.
  • Develop recommendations: If time permits, your model will surface machine learning based hypotheses for optimizing cost per lead, channels and tactic mixes. 

Skill Requirements

  • Solid understanding and experience with advanced statistics and modern machine learning predictive techniques such as GLMs, decision trees, forests, boosted ensembles, neural networks, deep learning, etc.
  • Strong coding skills using common data science tools, such as Python, R, Linux/Unix command line and shell scripting, etc.
  • Strong skills in data processing using SQL, Hive, Impala, Spark, or equivalent querying language
  • Familiarity with distributed storage and big data computing technology (AWS, Snowflake, Tableau, Hadoop, Spark, etc.)

You should have great attention to detail, be innovative, collaborative, analytical, hands-on, inquisitive, and be a quick learner.

Education Requirements

  • Current Masters or PhD Student with an expected graduation date of December 2021 or May 2022
  • Currently enrolled in an advanced degree program in a quantitative discipline, such as statistics, data science, computer science, mathematics, engineering, physics, etc.
  • Retail or B2B marketing experience would be desirable.

Before the final selection, candidates will be expected to submit previous work displaying experience working with a Classification or Regression project using a machine learning model to solve a business problem or answer an analytical question and be prepared for a presentation covering their methodology and conclusions.
