Role Overview:
As the Senior Director for the Core Infrastructure group, you will be growing, leading, and managing the software engineering teams responsible for the core infrastructure services that are foundational to the Splunk Cloud Platform: job control and management on top of multiple Cloud Service Providers (Kubernetes), the internal service mesh between applications (Istio), traffic management both internally and between customer cloud and on-premise resources, customer placement and provisioning, resource efficiency, and more. Put simply, this group designs, builds, and runs all of the systems and services which underpin the Splunk Cloud Platform.

This is a software engineering role, where you will be expected to make critical buy vs. build decisions, and be able to reliably execute when we need to build something in-house. You will be expected to lead and evolve the organization and systems which enable Splunk’s Cloud Platform to scale through the next decade. In short, you will be a key enabler of the core business strategy for the company, and you will have a direct impact on the success of Splunk and our customers into the future.

This role involves collaborating closely with your peers across all engineering areas as well as product management, program management, and UX. Your teams will work across multiple engineering areas and are homed in many locations – the role requires flexibility and a willingness to learn.

Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of this role include:
  • You will map the business strategy onto your teams’ roadmaps, and ensure that the right priorities are funded and have credible plans for success (and then that we progress on executing them).
  • You will lead teams of software engineers to make the best choices between buying a solution and building one in-house
  • You will be accountable for initiatives that have significant business impact across a 6-18+ month time frame.
  • Encourage a data-driven culture to improve the performance, efficiency and scalability of services and systems to help scale the company.
  • You will diagnose and resolve systemic and organizational obstacles that prevent your team from delivering high-quality software.
  • You will champion an atmosphere of continuous improvement by serving as a coach, mentor, and technical advisor.
  • You will meet 1-1 with team members on a regular basis.
  • You will plan and support career development.
  • You will recruit and retain top talent, from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • You will cultivate and sponsor an environment that is psychologically safe, open to discussion and debate, and which values diversity of thought.
  • Provide technical leadership, career development, and mentoring to team members.

 

Requirements:

Our estimate is that the skills, competencies, and experiences below will require an individual with at least 15-20 years of experience building large software systems. That said, years of experience is but a proxy to knowledge, abilities, and experience.

 

  • Experience hiring and developing software engineers who recognize that production is a part of their job responsibility and who ensure delivery of quality services which reduce incidents impact and focus on the success of our customers.
  • Developing team identity, empowering direct reports and building career growth options for your team.
  • Experience working directly with customers and training software engineers how to work with customers.
  • Experience building cloud-native and/or on-premises infrastructure services.
  • Experience building and cultivating strong software engineering practices and processes
  • BS CS/EE or equivalent with 15+ years of industry experience, of which 5+ years is in Engineering Management.
  • Experience leading an organization and managing other managers at scale (e.g., an organization of 3+ software engineering teams)

Base Pay Range

SF Bay Area, Seattle Metro, and New York City Metro Area

Base Pay Range: $282,400.00 - 388,300.00 per year

California (excludes SF Bay Area), Washington (excludes Seattle Metro), Washington DC Metro, and Massachusetts

Base Pay Range: $254,160.00 - 349,470.00 per year

All other cities and states excluding California, Washington, Massachusetts, New York City Metro Area and Washington DC Metro Area.

Base Pay Range: $225,920.00 - 310,640.00 per year

Splunk provides flexibility and choice in the working arrangement for most roles, including remote and/or in-office roles. We have a market-based pay structure which varies by location. Please note that the base pay range is a guideline and for candidates who receive an offer, the base pay will vary based on factors such as work location as set out above, as well as the knowledge, skills and experience of the candidate. In addition to base pay, this role is eligible for incentive compensation and may be eligible for equity or long-term cash awards.
