You make it a point to meet and ideate with stakeholders early and often, fostering a collaborative and productive working environment. You balance a strong creative vision with performance. And effectively communicate the power of systematic design principles to all audiences.

You are a proven design leader, as well as a team player. You enjoy coaching and motivating others to produce their best work and gaining insight from product, engineering, editorial, audience, and analytics teams to bring simple, elegant solutions to market.

What you’ll do

As a Director of Product design, you will lead the holistic design experience for our ZTG brands including Spiceworks, PCMag, Mashable, ExtremeTech and AskMen. You’ll align design processes and the designers to support our vision and product strategy. You’ll improve the consistency and quality of the experience across our digital products. You’ll cultivate an open and inclusive culture for Product Design to flourish.

What will be your responsibilities

  • Leadership, Communication, and Problem Framing Skills
    • Experience crafting interdisciplinary team workshops to frame problems, mine for insights, align on product definition, and convert learnings into new product or feature ideas
    • Comfortable navigating ambiguity surrounding design problems and pushing for the exploration of multiple solutions to a single design problem
    • Set your reports up for success by educating Product and Tech partners about the value and impact of design and how Product Design works
    • Get cross functional teams on board with incorporating internal user research as a step in the product development process
    • Guide your reports across all stages of the design process 
    • Coach the cross-functional team in working with Product Design
  • User Experience Design Oversight
    • Ability to envision complex UX ecosystems and lead the creation of concepts that address design problems, deliver on user and brand values, and inspire teams to push the boundaries of what’s possible
    • Proficient in leading sketching, wireframing, and interaction modeling exercises, informed by user research, stakeholder requirements, content strategy, and use case scenarios across any/all digital platforms
    • Experience leading the execution of design system production and implementation, ensuring design principles are upheld and company-wide consistency is achieved
    • Unwavering attention to detail, an acute awareness that everything counts, and the drive to raise the bar with each new product release
  • Research and Strategy Management
    • Fluent in user research strategy — identifying opportunities to explore or validate design concepts with users, crafting audience-appropriate screeners and questionnaires, and drawing out valuable user insights and potential design optimizations
  • Project, Priority, and Timeline Adherence
    • Ability to estimate how much time, effort, and resources are needed per task and communicate with project management to prioritize requests, create timelines, and allocate resources across engagements
    • Experience leading the execution of agile methodologies, including Scrum and/or Kanban frameworks
    • Commitment to working with product management and technology teams to ensure on-time design delivery
    • Experience balancing evolving project needs, communicating blockers and delays as necessary
    • Self-motivated, highly-organized, always open to shifting priorities when required
    • Experience building end of year budget proposals that evaluates the creative team’s on-going technology, research, software, and training needs

What does it take to do this job

  • 10+ years of experience working in the field of digital product design
  • Minimum 4 years of experience as a Design Leader
  • A strong online portfolio demonstrating design sensibilities, UX principles, and research-driven thinking for web, software, and/or mobile applications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience Design (UXD), Visual Communication Design, or similar
  • Expert in executing agile methodologies (Scrum or Kanban)
  • Proficiency in Jira, or similar
  • Proficiency in prototyping tools e.g. Invision
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics
  • Familiarity with product animation tools g. Invision Studio, Framer X, or similar – a plus
