The Role

We are seeking a Senior Director of Data Engineering & Infrastructure to join the Data Team within the Engineering Department at SoFi. This is an exciting senior leadership role for someone to own, transform, and continuously improve SoFi’s Data Platform (consisting of production databases, data lake, and data warehouse) as well as Analytics & Machine Learning Platform. This is a great opportunity to make a huge impact on the course of the company that has data-based decisions a part of its DNA.

Preferred location: Seattle, WA. Other locations: San Francisco, CA; Salt Lake City, UT; and  Helena, MT.

What You'll Do:

  • Define an overarching end-to-end system architecture, vision and strategy to maximize the utility of enterprise data assets and enable & innovate a broad set of use cases.

  • Define standards to support data governance. 

  • Maintain and scale infrastructure. Excel in telemetry to ensure operational excellence and resilience of the infrastructure.

  • Lead enterprise-wide ETL & data engineering efforts.

  • Take accountability of the company’s production databases to ensure their scalability, resilience, security and access control.

  • Instill a plethora of industry best practices in the existing efforts.

  • Lead growth of the team including recruitment and professional development activities.

  • Train and mentor Product, Engineering, and Functional teams on topics related to data infrastructure and data engineering. Evangelize big data.


What You'll Need:

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.

  • Management skills and 10+ years of experience with developing and leading data engineering and data infrastructure teams in a modern technology organization.

  • Deep expertise in databases (Relational/PostgreSQL), ETL/data warehousing (Snowflake), data lake/big data infrastructure, and analytics/machine learning platforms with 7-10 years of relevant experience in the field.

  • Expertise in AWS cloud technologies (S3, Glue, Athena, SageMaker, Redshift, DMS, RDS, CloudFormation, etc.)

  • Expertise in Python/Scala, Kubernetes, containers (Docker, etc.), and configuration as code.

  • Must understand scalability challenges; have hands-on experience in architecting scalable, resilient and performing-under-load systems;

  • Ability to assess rapidly changing technologies and apply them to achieving business outcomes;

  • Ability to interact and exert influence with all business and engineering/IT areas and leadership levels; especially Information Security, Compliance, Data Science, Application Development and Infrastructure teams; 

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
