Analytical Toxicologist 1 (AT1)

The bench level analyst for the Division of Forensic Toxicology (DFT) in the Special Forensic Toxicology Drug Testing Laboratory (SFTDTL) for the Armed Forces Medical Examiner’s Office (AFMES) performs analyses on biological specimens for SFTDTL and serves as an analyst to the military drug testing community. This role assists in the research and in analytical projects as assigned and will perform any special testing as directed by laboratory management.
The successful candidate(s) will support the Office of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner (AFMES) as an entry-level analyst to the military drug testing community in Dover, DE.
Critical Work Responsibilities:
1. Perform analysis of biological specimens using the following techniques:
- Basic Knowledge of immunoassay methodology
- Basic Knowledge of Solid Phase and Liquid/ Liquid Drug Extractions
- Basic Knowledge of mass spectrometry and compound fragmentation
- Basic Knowledge of Quantitative Analysis
- Basic Knowledge of Instrumental Analysis
- Mass Spectrometry (Basic)
- Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (Basic)
- Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (Basic)
- Tandem Mass Spectrometry (Basic)
2. Maintain an accurate written record of all analyses performed and ensure proper archiving of those records.
3. Receive specimens and related calibrators into the laboratory, establish and maintain accurate chain of custody, accession specimens into the laboratory, aliquot specimens for subsequent testing and logs specimens into the LIMS.
4. Participates in Laboratory Analysis Programs including:
- Routine instrument maintenance
- Analysis of Quality Control specimens
- Preparation for laboratory inspections by Inspectors from certifying and accrediting agencies
- Responsible for maintaining laboratory facilities and equipment in operating condition and reporting discrepancies and problems to their supervisor
- Evaluation of laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) ensuring laboratory compliance with those standards; this involves reporting SOP discrepancies to the supervisor
5. Calibrate instruments, prepare reagents and samples for testing, complete testing and prepare written reports for supervisor.
6. Evaluation of instrumentation, extraction techniques, analysis protocols, and data review.
7. Complete research projects and function as assigned.
8. Maintains logs of analyses performed, equipment problems and solutions, freezer and refrigerator temperature logs and equipment operation logs.
9. Always maintain the laboratory in a Mission readiness status; this requires analyst to be aware of existing and potential problems concerning laboratory safety, equipment operation, maintain supply readiness and other critical laboratory functions.
10. Handle hazardous materials and hazardous waste, ensuring proper safety precautions are taken in storing and disposition of these materials.
11. Authorship in peer reviewed journal and/or presentation of scientific data.

Minimum Requirements:
- B.S. or M.S. in Science-related Field (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Forensics etc.)
- Must be able to successfully complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NAC-I).
- Possess the ability to work independently on multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
- Possess personality traits and professionalism necessary to maintain team cohesion and to set a good working example.
