Job Description:
As a Hardware Engineering Lab Manager, you will own the day-to-day operation of SiMa.ai's hardware lab, ensuring engineers across the organization have reliable access to a well-organized, well-equipped, and well-run lab environment. You will be hands-on with system bring-up, triage, and rework, while also owning the processes and discipline that keep the lab running smoothly for everyone who depends on it.
Responsibilities:
- Manage inventory of lab equipment, boards, components, and consumables — tracking stock levels, procurement needs, and asset location/ownership
- Perform system bring-up and setup for new boards and platforms, including initial power-on, configuration, and validation
- Triage hardware issues on boards and systems, isolating root cause and coordinating rework or repair as needed
- Perform hands-on rework of boards (rework of components, jumper wires, minor repairs) to support debug and issue resolution
- Run tests and validation on systems/boards per defined test plans, and record/report results accurately
- Manage lab usage and scheduling across teams, ensuring fair and efficient access to shared equipment and bench space
- Maintain lab organization, cleanliness, and safety standards ("lab decorum") — enforcing proper equipment handling, labeling, and storage practices
- Maintain calibration schedules and service records for lab test equipment
- Coordinate with hardware, firmware, and test engineering teams to prioritize lab activities and resolve equipment/resource conflicts
- Document lab processes, equipment usage guidelines, and standard operating procedures
- Support new engineer onboarding to lab tools, equipment, and safety protocols
Requirements:
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience with 5-8 years of experience in a hardware lab, test engineering, or bring-up/triage role.
- Hands-on experience with lab equipment: oscilloscopes, power supplies, multimeters, soldering/rework stations
- Practical experience with board-level rework (component-level soldering, jumper wires, BGA rework a plus)
- Experience with system bring-up, debug, and triage of hardware issues
- Familiarity with inventory management practices and tools (spreadsheets, inventory/asset management systems)
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage competing priorities across multiple teams and projects
- Basic understanding of PCB assembly, electrical/electronic fundamentals
Personal Attributes
- Highly organized, with strong attention to detail and process discipline
- Hands-on and proactive, comfortable owning problems end-to-end
- Strong communicator, able to coordinate across multiple teams and stakeholders
- Reliable and accountable, with a strong sense of ownership over the lab environment
- Collaborative team player who fosters a positive, respectful lab culture
