The Director eCommerce Merchandise Planning is responsible for leading the Shutterfly brand category sales and margin planning which includes integrating assortment, marketing, pricing and promotions, and visual merchandising elements that achieve our customer and financial goals.   You will combine an understanding of retail best practices and digital sales drivers as well as integrate into operations planning.

This person will have demonstrated skill with developing annual, seasonal, and daily merchandise financial plans as well as in-season forecasting capabilities. Additionally, they will be able to quickly analyze and synthesize data into actionable insights and present clear concise impact and results leading to recommendations for improvements and optimizations.  This position reports to the VP, Ecommerce and works closely with our GM and Category Managers, Growth Analytics, Demand Planning, Ecommerce Merchandising & Ops, Marketing, and Finance to drive revenue and margin while exceeding our customer expectations.      

Your success will be because you are/have... 

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in merchandising planning for consumer brand w/ 5 years leading teams. 
  • Proven experience in merchandising forecasting – demand sales, margin and supply / inventory implications driving growth linking key eCommerce and retail practices that impact results.    
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to recognize actionable trends in data.
  • Action and results oriented with the ability to own/make decisions to achieve desired results.
  • Partners well cross-functionally seeks input and collaboration.  Leads and builds consensus appropriately; indirectly influences.
  • Passionate about the customer with a strong interest in driving user engagement through digital retail practices.

  • Bachelor’s degree with strong academic record. 
  • Extensive familiarity with P&L analysis
  • Extensive familiarity with MS Word, PowerPoint, and other database programs. Considered advanced in Excel. Experience in Tableau, Power BI or other Business Intelligence tools, a plus.
  • Able to function well in an ambiguous environment where functional direction at time may be undetermined

      Key Responsibilities

Pricing, Promo & Shipping Strategies

  • Builds and oversees the long-term pricing, promotional and shipping strategy across product & assortment categories by aligning department strategy with overall corporate strategy
  • Oversees the analysis of performance of the current pricing strategy for all categories with management guidance by reviewing current information on sales, profits, margins, mark-up, and discount rates (mark-downs); and maintaining up-to-date statistics based on defined performance metrics.

Merchandise Sales Planning & Forecasting

  • Actively participate in building strategic financial plans that align with company goals.
  • Partner with Growth Analytics to construct short and long-term omnichannel category financial plans using sales trends, market research, CRM data, and merchant vision to aggressively chase growth and mitigate downtrends.
  • Define the methodology and develop an efficient and repeatable process for improved sales plan development and iterative weekly sales forecasting that improves accuracy.
  • Lead the development of reporting promotion scorecards and database that enables robust evaluation and improved sales planning as well as in-season opportunities and risks.
  • Accurately forecast revenue at the appropriate product level reflecting business trends and incorporating marketing, promotion and site drivers enabling the Ecommerce team to drive the day to day business results.
  • Works closely with GM team in assortment rationalization that leads to improved productivity as well as with demand planning & operations to ensure initial markup & maintained margin are achievable. 

Analysis & Reporting 

  • Lead and provide planning expertise in preparing sales, margin reports and in-depth analysis, creating performance recaps and lead cross-functional meetings to review performance and recommend improvements based on historical data trends
  • Independently analyze performance as well as direct additional analysis that provide insights and informs opportunities to improve financial results.

Leadership / Team

  • Motivate the team to be customer-centric and have a growth mindset
  • Effectively leads the Merchandising Planning team, coordinating resources to maximize the impact
