UOP International is a joint collaboration between University of the Pacific (UOP) and Shorelight. The mission of the program is to immerse first-year international students in the academic and cultural life of the university, help them acclimate to campus, and provide the support that increases their academic success and the likelihood of obtaining their degrees at UOP.
 
Job Overview
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor I teaches listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar skills at one or more levels in a university-based, intensive ESL program.  This role combines English language instruction and support with academic instruction and acculturation.   ESL Instructors participate in extracurricular events, including student orientation, and maintain teaching-related records and reports. ESL Instructors also assist in materials development/coordination or other assigned projects that add value to the program.
Essential Functions
Teaching
  • Teach English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to international students enrolled in UOP International
  • Work in a team environment with other instructors and the campus partnership team to select and prepare appropriate teaching and learning materials for international students (including textbooks, online materials, in-house materials, and self-created materials)
  • Develop relevant and appropriate lesson plans with clear objectives that align with specified student learning outcomes
  • Utilize effective teaching strategies that meet the individual needs of students
  • Assess students and provide both formative and summative evaluations that measure student performance in attaining specified student learning outcomes
  • Provide oral and written feedback to students in a timely manner
  • Adhere to university policies regarding academic integrity and related university academic policies
  • Provide out-of-class academic support for students
  • Substitute-teach for other colleagues as needed
Administrative
  • Carry out teaching-related administrative tasks, such as monitoring attendance and preparing students’ academic progress reports, weekly grades, and records of work
  • Support team efforts to obtain or maintain program accreditation as required
  • Participate in student events as appropriate, as an integral part of the teaching/learning program
  • Participate in and contribute to orientation sessions
  • Conduct a peer observation at least once a year
  • Participate in staff development and professional training as required
  • Attend university and program meetings as required
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in TESOL or closely related field, such as applied linguistics
  • Two years of related experience, including one year in an academic ESL program
  • Excellent written and oral English ability 
  • Facility with class management tools and forms of media to support interactive and student-centered classroom instruction
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment and exhibit cross-cultural competence and understanding
  • Demonstrated professionalism, flexibility, and reliability
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proven ability to clearly deliver lessons using communicative-based instruction
  • Eligibility to work in and travel freely to and from the United States without sponsorship
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrable knowledge of applied linguistics, second language acquisition, language-teaching methodologies, assessment, and curriculum/lesson planning; TEFL certifications (CELTA, DELTA, Bridge, or Oxford)
  • Overseas experience or experience teaching in multicultural/multilingual classrooms
  • Competence in a foreign language
