About the Role

 

As the European Patent Attorney at Shionogi, you will be responsible for managing a wide range of patent-related intellectual property matters across Europe. The role involves developing and implementing effective patent strategies, managing patent applications and overseeing litigation processes. It also includes conducting thorough IP due diligence for licensing and acquisitions, and providing clear, pragmatic legal advice to colleagues across the organisation.

 

Being a hands-on role, you will serve as the primary liaison between the European operations and the Patent/Trademark Team in Japan and/or the US, supporting global initiatives and ensuring alignment with corporate strategy. Additionally, you will assist with general legal matters for the European business, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and policies.

 

This role requires travel to Japan and across Europe to meet with team members, stakeholders, and external partners.

 

What are we looking for?

 

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual with:

 

  • UK/European qualified lawyer and European patent attorney
  • Working experience of pharmaceutical industry as a patent attorney, either in house or as external counsel
  • Substantive knowledge and experience of European patent search, patent prosecution, and patent litigation in the pharmaceuticals sector
  • Deep knowledge of European patent laws, regulations, and procedures
  • Proven ability to manage complex IP portfolios and advise on cross-border IP issues
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking capabilities
  • Fluent English essential with strong written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working with Japanese companies or familiarity with Japanese business culture is advantageous
