About the Role

We are seeking a strategic and experienced European Patent Attorney to lead patent-related initiatives across Europe. This stand-alone position will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing Shionogi’s European IP strategy, ensuring alignment with global objectives and supporting innovation across our product portfolio.

You will work closely with colleagues in the US and Japan, with a direct daily reporting line into our Patent/Trademark Team in Japan. Your focus will be on developing and implementing forward-looking patent strategies, supporting product development and lifecycle management, and advising on IP matters that influence business decisions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading strategic patent planning and portfolio management across Europe
  • Collaborating with global teams to ensure cohesive IP strategy and execution
  • Providing high-level guidance on IP risks and opportunities in licensing, partnerships, and acquisitions
  • Supporting compliance and general legal matters relevant to the European business
  • Acting as the primary European IP contact for internal and external stakeholders

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for a highly skilled and strategic individual with:

  • Qualification as a UK/European lawyer and European patent attorney
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry, either in-house or as external counsel
  • Strong expertise in European patent law, prosecution, and portfolio strategy
  • Proven ability to lead cross-border IP initiatives and advise on complex IP matters
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Strategic mindset with strong analytical capabilities
  • Fluent English (written and spoken); familiarity with Japanese business culture is a plus
