Position: Medical Assistant
 
Location: South Coast Gynecologic Oncology, San Diego, CA  
 
Employment Type: Full-Time    
Hourly Range: Based on level of experience.  
 
The medical assistant is an essential member of the care team who performs the designated protocols within the clinic to assist providers. This role is intended to assist medical providers in completing health care visits and carry out orders to ensure patients have access to quality care. This position is expected to execute their duties in a professional and efficient manner under the clinical supervision of the medical provider.
 
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  
  • Process referrals according to the level of urgency and physician scheduling needs.
  • Entry of new referrals into EMR system as applicable
  • Documents necessary information pertaining to the referral order in the patient’s chart or EHR
  • Verifies insurance eligibility
  • Submits authorization to insurances as necessary, tracks the status of the authorization. Once approved, documents applicable information into the EMR system for tracking and billing.
  • Coordinates between patient and provider to schedule appointment. Provides special instructions if needed. Communicates with patient and provider of any delays in scheduling.
  • Communicates with primary care provider to inform of any delays or barriers to care
  • Monitors patient compliance and re-schedules appointments as needed
  • Responsible for tracking medical records receipt and assure that all necessary clinical information is received in a timely manner and prior to appointment date.
  • Works with the Primary Care Provider to work on re-processing authorization denials or additional coding needs.
  • Manage referrals at every stage to avoid backlog.
  • Handle all incoming new patient calls in a courteous manner; provides callers with an answer to their questions as best as possible.
  • Handles all incoming new patient faxes and emails to assure that patients are scheduled and referring physician needs and concerns are addressed.
  • Seeks assistance of supervisor when unable to process all referrals to avoid backlog and the clinical consequences of delays.
  • Understands the organization’s commitment to provide high quality patient care. Promotes a Patient centered environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  • Must have a high level of organizational skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with a variety of people.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with staff, vendors, medical providers, and patients.
  • Understanding of insurances to include PPO, EPO, and HMO.
  • Complete many different duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Must be able to work under stress when confronted with critical or unusual situations.
  • Must be able to follow instructions explicitly.
  • Demonstrate ability to exercise analytic ability.
  • Ability to demonstrate lab safety and aseptic techniques.
Qualifications:  
  • High School graduate or GED.
  • MA certification
  • Current CPR certification
  • 2-3 years experience as a medical assistant
  • Medical Terminology required.
  • EMR experience required, preferred experience with EPIC.
  • Medical Assistant experience preferred, not required.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
