General Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for performing duties associated with attaining meter readings; reconnect and disconnecting meter service due to failure to pay; detecting and reporting signs of meter tampering or theft of service; provide accurate information for billing practices; be available for call-out after regular work hours; and promote a favorable relationship between the Cooperative and the customer.

Education

Minimum 

High School or GED

 

 

 

Experience

Minimum 

One (1) year meter reading experience with an electric utility or related industry.

 

Preferred 

Working knowledge of electrical safety.

 

Preferred 

Experience or similar work with an electric utility or related industry.

 

 

 Other Requirements

  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment, including a personal computer, printers, copy machines, telephone, and fax machine.
  • Ability to work irregular hours for assignment completion and flexibility to change scheduling and report to work on short notice during emergency situations.
  • A valid Florida driver’s license for regular driving privileges of a company vehicle; must have and maintain an acceptable driving record as determined by SECO Energy.
  • Frequent business travel to all areas of service territory required.
  • Normal work hours shall be eight (8) hours between 6:00 am and 12:00 am midnight, Monday through Friday.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check, physical and drug screen.

 

Living Requirement            

To ensure timely response to Call outs, must live within 40 miles radius from the assigned reporting location.  Employees who live more than a 40 mile radius from their assigned reporting location must relocate within 6 months of employment.  All employees living within the thirty (30) mile radius and are subject to call-outs, are expected to meet the one (1) hour response requirement as stated in Article 10.5. Those employees living over thirty (30) miles but no more than forty (40) miles and subject to call-outs will be required to report within ninety (90) minutes. Regardless of the living distance, employees that are on-call and provided with a SECO vehicle are required to respond within forty-five (45) minutes as detailed in Article 10.5.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Ability to acquire knowledge in meter identification by type and application; acquire technical skill in reconnecting and disconnecting energized electric meters up to 200 amps.
  • Ability to acquire proficiency in the operation of electronic meter reading equipment; possess a high level of attention to detail to capture meter readings at 100% accuracy and enter information in written or electronic form.
  • Ability to make independent decisions commensurate with responsibilities and work independently and productively and results oriented in order to complete assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal and listening skills for effective interaction with employees, managers, customers, and the public; ability to deal accordingly with irate customers or animals in awkward situations arising from the disconnection of electric service.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and use of personal computers with ability to acquire skill and use of MS Office products and corporate software programs applicable to the position.
  • English is the primary business language. Second language in Spanish is desirable.

  • Operate personal computer devices in vehicles utilizing MS Office products, I-Vue’s App Suite, or other corporate software programs, to view daily job assignments or transfer jobs to other Technicians, as necessary.
  • Disconnect or reconnect energized electric service meters.
  • Read and accurately record meter readings from commercial, industrial, or residential meters, as directed.
  • Perform miscellaneous service orders to include, but not limited to disconnect for non-payment, meter change outs, read meter/change accounts, etc.
  • Report and replace broken or missing meter seals.
  • Observe and report damage to meters and signs of tampering; irregular or hazardous meter conditions.
  • Explain company policies and report customer questions or complaints to management on matters such as high bills, area light outages or hazardous conditions, etc.
  • May read meters inside substations or near energized facilities (when properly trained).
  • Assist Meter Readers to complete routes as needed.
  • Maintain good public relations with customers.
  • Maintain current knowledge of meter reading equipment technology.
