Summary: 

The Principal Scientist – Data Management and Solutions – reports to the Senior Director, Data Science, within the Technical Operations and Process Sciences (TOPS) division. This is greenfield opportunity in a newly formed Group tasked with the objective of leading a trailblazing data science effort to help accelerate the development of transformative therapies targeting cancer and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. To this end, the ideal candidate will be responsible for:

  • Building a tactical and scalable data infrastructure with connectivity to key data sources
  • Prioritizing, designing, and delivering data solutions to the organization
  • Continual management and support of data assets based on current and changing needs

Accordingly, the ideal candidate will interact heavily with Lab Scientists, Business Partners, Data Analysts, and Data Engineers across our IT, Process Development, Manufacturing, Quality, and Product Supply teams to architect and implement a framework for data management and data standards that coordinates a variety of internal data systems, their integration, stewardship, reporting, governance and usage (i.e., data solutions).  As a result, you will help us develop better manufacturing processes and drug products, deepen the understanding of our processes and products, culminating in optimal data-driven decision making.


Principal Responsibilities:

  • Define operating model and data management considerations across the TOPS division
  • Conduct high level mapping of available data systems, including our unique data flow and pipeline requirements.  Develop an overarching understanding of architectural needs
  • Coordinates across the TOPS organization to identify and connect to key data sources
  • Oversee specific and unique data engineering needs that are required to better structure/utilize data and improve the data infrastructure
  • Work closely with IT to ensure TOPS data management infrastructure strategy aligns with Seattle Genetics data governance policies
  • Participate in planning for application upgrades that will result in changes to the TOPS data management environment. In some cases, provide final approval for system changes
  • Scope, design, and deliver effective data solutions based on the current and changing needs of the organization
  • Build, develop, and motivate a diverse team as evidenced by effective hiring, coaching, and mentoring of direct reports
  • Ensure data solutions are reliable, secure, and available across the TOPS-IT organization
  • Continuously work to improve quality of data content, context, and associated business rules to ensure front-end usability of data
  • Continuously gather data insights to build business efficiencies and address gaps in capabilities
  • Harmonize key policies (e.g. Data Quality, Data Definition, Data Creation policies) and processes necessary to carry out those policies, in collaboration with cross functional data governance SMEs

 Required Qualifications:

  • Masters or PhD degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Chemical/Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum of 3+ years of relevant work experience for candidates with PhD and 5+ years for Masters’ degree
  • Experience with enterprise-level data analyses, automation, and providing data-focused system integration solutions
  • Experience architecting data integrations and running data flows to support complex data initiatives
  • Proficient in the use of relational database systems (MS SQL, SQL Lite, MySQL), some knowledge of Oracle DB systems, as well as reasonable understanding how the DB engine works
  • Thorough understanding of current state and future trends in data management, architecture, IoT connectivity, data integration, data warehouse, and cloud
  • Experience with data visualization software and techniques (Power BI, Tableau, D3.js)
  • An effective communicator able to bridge between biologics/chemical sciences and information technology
  • Excellent influencing and networking skills paired with stakeholder management experience in a multi-layered global environment
  • Strong project management and technical leadership skills with an enthusiasm for working in an interdisciplinary team environment

  • Knowledge of one or several programming languages (Python, R, etc.)
  • Knowledge of machine learning techniques and libraries
  • Knowledge of big data and cloud technologies (Hadoop, Google Cloud Platform, AWS, etc.)
  • Passion for learning new technologies and understanding the needs of diverse users
  • Familiarity with crowdsourcing approaches for data collection (wisdom of the crowd)
  • Ability to work efficiently and demonstrate a bias for action in a fast-paced environment, working on ambiguous and challenging projects
  • Has an appreciation of the type and uniqueness of data from biopharmaceutical process development and manufacturing
  • Familiarity with ELNs, Spotfire, Tableau, Java, R, Python, JMP, Discoverant, etc.
  • Experience in Agile methodology and execution, user experience and design thinking
