Reporting to the EVP, Human Resources, the Senior HR Leader for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will define, lead, and execute the company’s DEI strategy, ensuring Seagen offers a powerful, inclusive experience for all its employees and delivers the diverse talent and capabilities needed to achieve our business strategy. The company is seeking a strong, experienced business leader to take this role; it has been leveled as an Executive Director with a clear path to Vice President based on demonstrated leadership and performance in the role.  

The Head of DEI will serve as the organization's go-to leader for everything related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The position will chair the DEI Executive Council made up of senior leaders across the company who will provide strategic advice on DEI strategy, communications, and execution. Within HR, you will sit on the HRLT and work closely with HR Business Partners, Total Rewards, Talent Development, HR Operations, Talent Acquisition and HR Reporting and Analytics to ensure that DEI initiatives integrate with other talent initiatives. 


In this highly visible role, we are looking for a business leader who has the influencing and networking skills, sense of urgency and self-confidence to diagnose complex business and people issues and drive to a solution. You must be driven and have the confidence to engage effectively and influence executive leaders, HR partners, and various internal and external constituencies. You will need strong business acumen, systems thinking, excellent communications and influencing skills, as well as the ability to dive deep, get into the details and negotiate many sensitive and potentially divisive DEI matters and drive change. This is not an easy job, but it represents a huge opportunity to drive meaningful change. 

This position will partner with executives and HR leaders across the company to deliver a wide range of key DEI priorities, including: 

  • Build, refine and execute DEI strategies to enhance the employee experience for all employees and bring about real change within our organization, particularly for diverse employees 
  • For 2022, execute against our approved DEI deliverables with a particular focus on reducing turnover curve among people of color, especially black employees 
  • Lead and facilitate company engagement with employee resource networks, including current networks for women, black, Asian, and LGBTQIA+ employees. Work closely within these networks to ensure we are offering an inclusive experience where all our people have a sense of belonging and can be themselves 
  • Collaborate with Talent Acquisition to drive change in our recruiting and selection processes to improve placement of diverse candidates, particularly within leadership and among underrepresented minorities. This leader will also network internally with current diverse employees to tap networks, increase the number of referrals and to identify exceptional talent to recruit 
  • Work closely with Total Rewards to assess SGEN compensation, promotion, benefits, and other reward programs through a DEI lens, and recommend changes as appropriate 
  • Collaborate with Talent Development to ensure equity in talent management and development processes such as talent review, succession planning, and high potential development. Support the development and execution of DEI training and awareness strategies for colleagues across the company, as well as training for people managers and team leaders 
  • Manage the annual Affirmative Action Plan process and follow up on any gaps or areas of underrepresentation. Also manage any OFCCP or EEOC interactions or audits 
  • Provide outreach to external professional and other minority organizations in Seattle and nationally to enhance Seagen’s visibility in minority communities and attract diverse talent to the company. Represent the company on DEI matters externally and identify best practices that can be incorporated into our HR and business processes internally 


  • BA/BS, with a preference for an MBA, PhD, or other relevant graduate degree 
  • A minimum of 15-20+ years of progressive work experience as an HR or Business Leader in high-growth, high-quality companies 
  • A preference for at least 4-5 years of experience leading DEI initiatives, either directly as a DEI professional or indirectly as a business leader 
  • Experience in Biotech or Life Sciences is a plus though we are open to individuals from other markets with a high human capital dimension 
  • Experience leading sensitive organizational change and in coaching and influencing leaders; Manage difficult conversations with management and employee groups, and resolve highly sensitive and often controversial matters 
  • Understand best practices and current trends in the DEI space 
  • Design and get traction on new programs and ideas  
  • High-level facilitation capabilities and excellent platform skills  
  • Expertise in employee communications and change management 
  • Business acumen, including problem solving and analytical skills and self-initiative 
  • Strong strategic mind set, along with ability to flex to highly executional activities. Excellent program management and planning skills with experience managing cross-functional teams and projects. Successful in navigating ambiguity 
  • A bias toward action and roll up your sleeves, get it done attitude
