Seagen is looking for a collaborative, solutions-oriented and conscientious privacy attorney. This role will partner cross-functionally to help advance and improve Seagen’s global privacy program. 
The Privacy team provides thought leadership and counsel across the enterprise to minimize privacy and data security risk in support of business objectives.   


Principal Responsibilities: 

  • As a privacy expert, provide legal advice and creatively solve complex problems with significant impact on the business at an enterprise level   
  • Work collaboratively and cross-functionally, presenting to governing committees, decision-making bodies and executives to gain alignment on decisions and goals, and drive privacy-forward solutions for long term strategic efficiency  
  • Provide input on both tactics and strategy, advising the business across all levels in the organization on best practices and compliance with privacy and data protection laws wherever the company operates, infusing privacy concepts into the company lexicon along the way to promote a privacy-compliant culture 
  • Serve as an expert resource to Seagen’s contracting functions, reviewing and drafting escalations of data privacy and security related contract terms in agreements of all types with vendors and business partners, including key collaborators on high profile initiatives 
  • Support and improve upon procedures for vetting and eventually auditing vendors, for compliance with Seagen privacy and data security policies and legal requirements 
  • Draft and implement policies, procedures and other governance at all levels of the organization to support a privacy and security by design approach  
  • Stay abreast of data privacy and security laws, regulations, enforcement actions, and impacts of new technology  
  • Play key role in investigating, documenting, and remediating potential security incidents that impact personal data 
  • Work with and support the business in interactions with external parties, including regulatory agencies, to meet requirements 
  • Represent the privacy team in design and implementation of new processes and systems affecting personal data 
  • As needed, generate and review privacy impact assessments, data inventories and maps, and other documents evidencing data protection due diligence and compliance  
  • Advise on corporate policies and procedures impacting personal data 
  • Develop and deliver privacy training and other communications to raise employee understanding of data protection obligations and best practices to minimize risk 
  • Assist the organization in improving processes and systems to meet or exceed data protection compliance requirements, with an eye toward scalable and sustainable practices 
  • As a privacy expert, partner with business teams to evaluate new initiatives, plans, and processes and incorporate privacy by design/default principles throughout development  

Required Qualifications: 

  • J.D. from a nationally accredited law school 
  • Admission and active membership in U.S. state bar 
  • 10+ years privacy practice at a law firm or in-house, with preference for biotech, pharma, or medical device experience 
  • Experience negotiating data protection agreements  
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills  
  • Flexibility and appetite to adapt to changes in continuously evolving environments  
  • Expert knowledge of privacy laws and regulations, including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA 
  • Able to translate complex rules and regulations into straightforward requirements that are easily understood by anyone 
  • Experience and interest in gaining a detailed understanding of how data is gathered, where it resides, how it's used  
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to program objectives, evaluate and document the tasks needed to achieve objectives, create actionable workplans and oversee to completion  
  • Self-organized and able to operate autonomously or with a team  
  • Fosters collaborative relationships to deliver results 
  • Comfortable proactively interfacing with stakeholders at all levels 
  • Operates with integrity, professionalism, and high ethical standards 
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills  
  • Awareness for escalating issues when appropriate

  • Ability to understand and adapt to emerging technologies 
  • Understanding of and/or experience in implementing Privacy by Design 
  • Takes initiative to be proactive, regardless of organizational maturity  
  • Competently carries out and follows through on directives, learns quickly, applies legal analysis in a business context, and works independently to identify and resolve issues 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • CIPP certification a plus 
  • Experience working with data privacy laws in Asia and Latin America a plus 
  • Past track record of process development and successfully implementing privacy best practices in highly matrixed, distributed organizations
