POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for ensuring that the equipment needed for operations is maintained and ready to use according to established safety and operations guidelines. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
- Must have one (1) year experience inspecting and maintaining cargo handling or stevedoring environment including and not limited to: rigging equipment, chains, hooks, shackles, wood, cable, slings, ropes, wire, spreader bars, water, chainsaw, and employee protective gear
- Must have one (1) year experience operating heavy equipment: 9K and 30K forklift
- Must have the ability to read, write, and speak Basic English
- Must be able to accurately process alpha/numeric information
- Must have the ability to function effectively in a fast paced, team oriented work environment
- Must have the ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees
- Must have the ability to think logically, follow procedures, instructions and make sound decisions
- The position requires a flexible schedule, including rotating overnight and day shifts, weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed
Preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Certification to operate heavy equipment (forklift).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary
- Perform all functions in accordance with operating and safety guidelines
- Ensure that equipment needed for operations is maintained and ready for use according to established safety and operational guidelines
- Inspect sling equipment, checking for knotted/twisted, damaged, bird caging, core protrusion, general corrosion, broken or cut strands, and for randomly distributed broken wires
- Prepare and fulfill stevedoring operations equipment and supply orders prior to the start of vessel operations including and not limited to: rigging equipment, chains, hooks, shackles, wood, cable, slings, ropes, wire, spreader bars, water, chainsaw, and employee protective gear
- Record distributed and returned items for vessel gear on supply inventory sheets
- Operate company work truck, 9K or 30K forklift to transport gear equipment to and from receiving/storage facility to and from various locations and docks in the terminal
- Perform general maintenance on gear equipment including and not limited for painting, greasing, removing of rust, etc. as needed or required
- Maintain a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards and awareness of surroundings (i.e. vehicles, people checking equipment, etc.) at all times
Secondary
- Sort and place materials and equipment on racks, shelves, or bins according to predetermined sequence such as product, size, type, material, etc.
- Ensure that material is safely accessible and safe for all who visit the gear room
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Subject to physical and/or DOT screening is required along with other tests as applicable.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit (while driving).
- The employee is occasionally required to climb, squat, twist, pinch, use finger dexterity, reach overhead and use repetitive foot motion.
- The employee is occasionally required to lift, carry, push and pull up to 110 pounds.
- The employee is continuously required to use eye-hand foot coordination.
- The employee is frequently required to talk and hear.
- The employee is frequently required to grasp, bend forward, reach forward, exercise repetitive wrist motion and use eye-hand coordination.
- The employee is frequently required to stand and walk.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
- Report safety hazards
- Immediately report incidents involving injury, illness, or property damage
- Wear appropriate PPE as instructed by immediate supervisor
- Comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and rules
- Refuse any unsafe task or operation
- Participate in safety meetings and training
- Be constantly aware of their personal safety and that of their coworkers.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives direct supervision from the Walking Foreman Crane and does not exercise supervision over any position.
CONDITIONS:
- Exposure to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind and high humidity during day and night shifts
- The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts
- The employee is continuously exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high
