POSITION SUMMARY:       
This position is responsible for ensuring the seamless and safe execution of maritime activities within a designated area. This position demands a comprehensive understanding of maritime regulations, vessel operations, safety protocols, and efficient resource management. The incumbent oversees a team of personnel engaged in vessel operations and logistics to ensure compliance with company policies, industry standards, and legal requirements. This position will work with voyage planning, preparation of load/discharge plans, stowage, and port operations. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. QUALIFICATIONS:
Required

 

  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience stowing vessels with containerized and break-bulk cargoes.
  • Minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience in a related field or equivalent combination of education and field experience.
  • Basic knowledge of utilizing two-way handheld radio.
  • Proficiency in English reading and writing at a basic level in a business environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Assertive individual with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in an industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead others and participate as a team player when needed.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and display strong initiative.
  • Willingness to work multiple operations and flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Capacity to think logically, establish and follow procedures, instructions, and make sound decisions.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, extended hours, holidays, and/or weekends as needed.
 
Preferred 
  • Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Marine Engineering, Logistics, or a related field.
  • Hazmat certification highly desirable.
  • Familiarization with OSHA regulations desired.
  • Intermediate skills in programs such as MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience in AS-400 system is a plus.
  • Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish) is a plus.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary
  • Coordinate and oversee all aspects of vessel operations, including loading, unloading, berthing, and departure procedures.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to optimize cargo handling processes, minimize turnaround times, and enhance overall operational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, maritime laws, and environmental standards during vessel operations.
  • Monitor vessel schedules and optimize operational efficiency to meet customer demands and company objectives.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as logistics, maintenance, and port authorities, to streamline operations and resolve any operational issues.
  • Optimize the allocation of resources, including personnel, equipment, and supplies, to maximize operational efficiency and minimize costs.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, automation, or technology adoption to streamline operations and enhance productivity.
  • Develop and implement strategies to manage operational challenges, such as inclement weather, equipment breakdowns, or labor shortages.
  • Maintain effective communication channels with internal stakeholders, such as Stevedoring manager, department heads, and frontline staff, to ensure alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols and procedures to minimize risks and accidents during vessel operations.
  • Communicate regularly with ship officers, the Stevedoring manager, and shore personnel to optimize workflow efficiencies and ensure effective coordination across all operational aspects.
  • Conduct regular inspections of vessels, equipment, and facilities to ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Stay updated on maritime regulations, industry best practices, and technological advancements to enhance safety and compliance measures.
  • Lead and manage a team of vessel operations staff, including supervisors, operators, and longshore personnel.
  • Provide training, guidance, and support to ensure the professional development and competency of team members.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, address disciplinary issues, and foster a positive work environment conducive to teamwork and collaboration.
  • Investigate and report any incidents, accidents, or non-compliance issues, and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Identify and prevent waste regarding equipment and materials/consumables used in daily operations.
  • Maintain a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards and awareness of surroundings (i.e. vehicles, people, equipment, etc.) at all times.
Secondary 
  • Prepare load and discharge plans for general, break bulk, and container cargos, ensuring efficient utilization of vessel capacity and adherence to cargo handling protocols.
  • Act as a liaison between corporate and local offices and operations, ensuring effective communication and alignment of objectives.
  • Address employee disciplinary issues promptly and fairly, following company policies and legal guidelines.
  • Resolve conflicts and differences in a positive and effective manner, fostering a collaborative and harmonious work environment.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use his/her fingers. 
  • The employee frequently is required to talk and/or hear. 
  • The employee is continuously required to sit.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. 
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives direct supervision from the JPI Stevedoring Manager. Exercises direct supervision over the supervisors, clerks, operators, and yard trucks laborers, to include all personal involved in the working of these vessels.
 
CONDITIONS:  
  • Outdoors exposure to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind and high humidity during day and night shifts
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
  • The employee is continuously exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
