POSITION SUMMARY:
This position assists with the performance of preventative and corrective maintenance to the containers and chassis fleet used for national and international shipping distribution. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
  • Must be currently enrolled or recently graduated from a Welding Program in a technical school.
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures involved in maintenance, repairs, and replacements.
  • Demonstrated safe and proper application of hand, pneumatic, and electric tools. 
  • Should possess basic knowledge and use of handheld computers.
  • Ability to communicate (read, write, and speak) in basic English.
  • Must be able to accurately process alpha/numeric information.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, as needed.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and strong initiative.
  • Ability to think logically and make sound decisions.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card within 30 days of employment
 
Preferred
  • Basic welding certification.
  • Welding experience in container/chassis maintenance and repair.
  • Working knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures involved in maintenance, replacements, and repairs.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary
 
  • Learn the intricacies and best practices of chassis structural welding repairs, container/chassis maintenance, and repair, under the guidance of experienced Container/Chassis Mechanics and Welders.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and repairing all chassis defects including ABS (air brake systems), wheels end, and structural assemblies.
  • Assist with repairing or replacing the landing gear on the busby or chassis.
  • Assist with assembling the neck, rear-end, and L-beam structures on the chassis for replacement or repair. 
  • Assist with disassembling, repairing, and replacing the axles and brake system on the busby or chassis.

 

  • Assist with electrical repairs and inspections.
  • Perform chassis inspections to ensure each chassis complies with DOT regulations.
  • Perform systematic inspections and repairs to intermodal equipment including flat racks and containers.
  • Perform repairs and restructures on intermodal equipment using a variety of hand and power tools, including Stick and MIG welding.
  • Perform mechanic skills including, but not limited to, welding, replacing damaged structures, damaged floors, doors, & container roofs and side panels
  • Paint the containers including painted markers identifying the container. 
  • Use a handheld device to log work orders and document repairs. 
  • Maintain documentation of inspections and repairs performed in the Distribution System Technology (DST) computer database or hand-held computer.
  • Maintain a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards, and maintain an awareness of their surroundings (i.e. vehicles, equipment, etc.) at all times. 
 
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  
  • The employee is continuously required to stand, walk, grasp, talk, hear and use eye-hand coordination. 
  • The employee is frequently required to lift, carry and push/ pull up to 30lbs.
  • The employee is frequently required to climb, bend forward, squat, kneel, twist, reach forward and pinch
  • The employee is frequently required to use repetitive wrist motion and finger dexterity.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit, crawl, and reach overhead.
  • The employee is occasionally required to lift, carry and push/pull up to 50lbs.
  • The employee is occasionally required to use repetitive foot motion, eye-hand-foot coordination.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral. vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives direct supervision from the Mechanics’ Foreman and Mechanics’ Manager; may assist other Mechanics in the performance of chassis or container repairs.  Does not exercise supervision over any position.
 
CONDITIONS:
  • Exposure to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind and high humidity during day and night shifts.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Moderate to high noise volume.
  • High vibration with use of sledgehammer and moderate vibration with use of hydraulic seating system.
