QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
Required
- Minimum six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in Safety within an industrial or transportation environment.
- Minimum three (3) years of experience in a leadership role, to include managing safety teams.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration), NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), Industrial Hygiene (IH), DOT/GHS (Hazardous materials), and ergonomics.
- Proven ability to develop, implement, and manage safety programs across multiple sites.
- Must possess a clean, valid driver’s license.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels internally and with external regulatory bodies.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to interpret data and drive decisions.
- Advanced PC skills (Excel, reporting, dashboards, and data analysis).
- Extensive knowledge of regulatory compliance frameworks and audit readiness practices.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, extended hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Ability to travel domestically within the United States approximately 30% of the time to support business operations, attend meetings, and visit various company locations.
- Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card within 30 days of employment.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- CSP (Certified Safety Professional) certification.
- Experience working in Ocean Transportation or Maritime Shipping industry.
- Experience managing Hazmat programs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and oversee the safety function across U.S. locations, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve safety and support safety-related policies and procedures.
- Drive consistent implementation of safety programs across all locations.
- Provide leadership and direction to Safety Supervisors and team members, ensuring accountability and effective execution of safety initiatives.
- Oversee multi-site safety operations, including conducting site visits to assess conditions and support program implementation.
- Lead and oversee audits, inspections, and on-site evaluations, ensuring deficiencies are identified and resolved.
- Analyze data and trends to identify risks and implement corrective and preventative actions.
- Lead accident prevention efforts and oversee incident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Develop and oversee safety training programs, including supervisor and new hire training.
- Conducts regular visits to operational areas to engage with employees, observe work practices, and reinforce a strong safety culture across all sites.
- Actively participates in field operations and partners with operations leadership to ensure alignment between safety protocols and operational practices, providing real-time guidance and collaborating with teams to address risks and improve compliance.
- Assist with the oversight of hazardous materials operations, including cargo handling, documentation, storage, transportation, and disposal.
- Maintain compliance documentation and ensure audit readiness at all times.
- Serve as a point of contact for regulatory agencies and support compliance communications.
- Monitor regulatory changes and recommend improvements to programs and practices.
- Coordinate emergency response activities and support incident management as needed.
- Prepare and present safety performance reports and metrics to leadership.
- Additional duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- The employee is continuously required to walk, talk, and hear.
- The employee is frequently required to sit and stand.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
- The employee must occasionally use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
- The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel crouch, or crawl; and smell.
- The employee is occasionally required to climb steep stairs and access tight spaces.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors and fellow employees.
- Ability to follow procedures and instructions precisely.
- Ability to work independently.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Position reports to Global Security & Compliance Director. Exercises full supervisory responsibility over Safety personnel across multiple locations, including Supervisors and related staff, with accountability for performance management, development, and execution of safety programs.
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
- Evaluate and report safety hazards.
- Immediately respond to and investigate any incidents involving injury, illness, or property damage.
- Develop, enforce and comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and rules.
- Prepare and lead meetings and training sessions.
- Be constantly aware of the safety of all employees, property and equipment.
CONDITIONS:
- Work is performed primarily in office, vehicles; exposed to changing weather (temperature & humidity) and outdoor environments, during day and night shifts.
- The employee travels domestically and locally as required per business needs, to support multi-site operations, including regular site visits to operational locations. Travel may include extended hours and occasional overnight stays as needed.
- The employee occasionally works near moving trucks/equipment and/or mechanical parts.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
- May be required to work on holidays and weekends as necessary.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
