POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the work of employee groups performing stevedoring functions and vessel stowage, maintaining close communication with the Equipment Operators, Longshore and Hatch Foreman who are physically loading the vessel, as well as overseeing the Stevedoring Department. The job functions must be carried out in accordance with general work instructions and established office practices, procedures and precedents. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
- Must have minimum three (3) years of industry related experience as Hatch Foreman, overseeing stevedore and stowage functions during vessel operations.
- Must have a minimum one (2) year forklift experience, operating 9K, 30K or 52K forklift
- Must be forklift certified
- Must have a current and valid driver’s license with clean record.
- Must have the ability to read, write, and speak Intermediate English
- Must be able to obtain HAZMAT certification within 90 days from hire
- Must have the ability to oversee personnel effectively, and to handle administrative functions related to the job
- Must have the ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled employees engaged in stevedoring operations.
- Ability to meet and deal effectively with stevedore co-workers
- Must have the ability to function effectively in a fast paced, team-oriented work environment
- Must have the ability to work independently with limited supervision and strong initiative
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees
- Must have the ability to think logically, follow procedures, instructions and make sound decisions.
- Must be able to obtain Transportation Worker’s Identification Credential (TWIC) within 90 days of start date
- The position requires a flexible schedule, including rotating overnight and day shifts, weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary
- Performs all functions in accordance with operation and safety guidelines
- Ensure that stow plan for the loading and discharging of vessel is being followed.
- Oversee coordination and execution of loading and discharge during vessel operations. Provide guidance and direction to group of employees assigned.
- Assist in the analysis of workload of all given areas and allocates personnel to areas needed.
- Ensure proper gear is in good condition before use when lifting cargo
- Report any damages immediately to Superintendent
- Use two-way hand-held radios to communicate with staff while operation is in progress
- Comprehend flagman hand signals
- Cooperate with US Customs during cargo operation for each vessel
- Maintain complete confidentiality of all information
- Report employees not using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment to Superintendent
- Perform administrative functions related to overseeing personnel, such as documenting performance, attendance infractions, approving timecards, etc.
- Maintain a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards and awareness of surroundings (i.e. vehicles, people checking equipment, etc.) at all times.
Primary
- Operate 9K, 30K or 52K forklift when needed to move cargo to designated area
- Performs additional job duties as assigned
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Subject to physical and/or DOT Screening is required along with other tests as applicable
- The employee must be able to work in high altitudes
- The employee is occasionally required to sit (while driving), grasp and exercise eye-hand coordination and eye-hand-foot coordination.
- The employee is constantly required to balance and engage in tasks requiring gross manipulation/handling.
- The employee is frequently required to reach from waist to shoulder, reach floor to waist, exercise repetitive foot motion.
- The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk, hear, exercise cervical (neck) flexion, extension and rotation, and exercise back flexion, extension and rotation.
- The employee is frequently required to talk and hear
- The employee is occasionally required to climb, kneel, bend/stoop,, squat/crouch,, reach overhead and use fine motor skills/finger dexterity.
- The employee is occasionally required to lift/carry, up to 55 pounds
- The employee is frequently required to lift/carry up to 17 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
- Report safety hazards

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives direct supervision from the Ship Superintendent, and exercises supervision over Operators, Hatch Foreman, and Longshore employees assigned.
CONDITIONS:
- Outdoors, exposure to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind, and high humidity during day and night shifts
- The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts
- The employee is continuously exposed to dust, fumes, and airborne particles
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high
- Moderate vibration when operating equipment
