Satsuma Pharmaceuticals is a biopharmaceutical company preparing to launch ATZUMITM (dihydroergotamine (DHE) nasal powder), a novel therapeutic product approved in the US for the acute treatment of migraine. ATZUMITM incorporates proprietary advanced powder and device technology (SMART – Simple MucoAdhesive Release Technology™) and is designed to be easy-to-use, easy-to-carry and for quick self-administration.
Position Summary: 
Lead the company’s information technology strategy, architecture, systems, security, and operational execution.  This role is responsible for establishing scalable, secure, and compliant IT capabilities appropriate for a lean, single-product, commercial-stage pharmaceutical company, with particular emphasis on commercial systems, financial systems, cybersecurity, vendor management, business continuity, and IT governance.
The Head of IT will serve as the company’s senior IT leader and hands-on business partner across Commercial, Finance, Quality, Regulatory, Medical Affairs, Legal, Operations, and external service providers. The role will be responsible for ensuring that core enterprise systems are appropriately configured, integrated, supported, and governed to enable launch readiness and early commercialization.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the company’s IT strategy, roadmap, architecture, and execution in support of US commercial launch readiness and early commercialization.

  • Design and manage IT architecture appropriate for a lean pharmaceutical startup, including enterprise applications, identity and access management, data management, integrations, infrastructure, collaboration tools, and vendor-managed services.

  • Serve as the senior IT business partner to Commercial, Finance, Operations, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Medical Affairs, Legal, and executive leadership.

  • Lead implementation, integration, and ongoing support of commercial IT capabilities, including CRM, customer master/data management, field force enablement, promotional material review/control systems, digital asset management, approved email or promotional content tools, and related reporting capabilities.

  • Partner with Commercial, Medical, Legal, and Regulatory stakeholders to ensure promotional material control, review workflows, access controls, audit trails, and document retention processes are appropriately supported by IT systems.

  • Oversee financial and enterprise systems, including the company’s existing NetSuite ERP platform, ensuring appropriate support for finance, procurement, purchasing, inventory-related interfaces, reporting, controls, user access, and integration needs.

  • Lead IT security strategy and execution, including cybersecurity risk management, endpoint protection, identity and access controls, vendor security assessments, data protection, backup and recovery, security monitoring, incident response planning, and employee security awareness.

  • Establish and maintain IT policies, procedures, controls, and governance practices appropriate for a regulated pharmaceutical company preparing for commercial operations.

  • Manage IT vendor selection, contracting input, implementation oversight, service levels, performance management, and issue escalation across managed service providers, software vendors, consultants, and integration partners.

  • Support launch-critical business processes and systems readiness, including commercial operations, trade/distribution interfaces, customer data, finance operations, reporting, compliance workflows, and executive dashboards.

  • Develop and maintain IT business continuity, disaster recovery, access management, data integrity, and change management processes suitable for a commercial-stage life sciences company.

  • Ensure appropriate data governance and reporting capabilities across key business systems, including commercial, finance, supply chain-adjacent, quality, and compliance-related systems.

  • Partner with Finance and functional leaders to manage IT budgets, software subscriptions, vendor costs, implementation plans, and system lifecycle planning.

  • Identify IT, cybersecurity, systems, vendor, launch, and operational risks; develop mitigation plans; and advise executive leadership on potential business impact.

  • Establish IT KPIs and management reporting for system availability, help desk/service levels, security posture, project delivery, vendor performance, user access reviews, and launch readiness.

  • Manage external consultants, managed service providers, software vendors, and implementation partners in a lean operating environment.

  • Provide hands-on leadership and execution as needed, including troubleshooting, vendor coordination, requirements gathering, system administration oversight, and project management.
 
Minimum Requirements Education/Experience: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, business, life sciences, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.

  • 12+ years of progressive IT, enterprise systems, security, or technology leadership experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, or life sciences industry.

  • Prior experience leading IT readiness for a first commercial launch or early commercial-stage pharmaceutical company strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and supporting scalable IT architecture in a small or emerging company environment, including outsourced or vendor-managed IT operating models.

  • Strong experience with enterprise business systems, including ERP, CRM, identity/access management, collaboration platforms, reporting tools, and system integrations.

  • Hands-on experience with NetSuite ERP support, governance, integrations, reporting, user access, financial controls, and business process enablement strongly preferred.

  • Experience implementing or supporting commercial pharmaceutical systems, including CRM, customer data platforms, promotional material review/control systems, digital asset management, field force tools, or related commercial operations platforms strongly preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of cybersecurity, vendor risk management, business continuity, disaster recovery, access controls, data privacy, and security best practices for a regulated business environment.

  • Familiarity with pharmaceutical commercial compliance needs, including promotional review processes, audit trails, document retention, field force enablement, and controlled access to approved materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage external IT vendors, managed service providers, software implementation partners, consultants, and cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to operate both strategically and tactically in a lean startup environment, including building fit-for-purpose processes without unnecessary infrastructure or bureaucracy.

  • Excellent project management, communication, prioritization, and executive-level influencing skills.

  • Ability to translate business needs into practical systems, processes, data, security, and vendor solutions that support launch readiness and scalable commercial operations.

Benefits and Pay:
The expected salary range for this position is $180,000 - $215,000 USD. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
