Laboratory Supervisor

Quality Santa Cruz, California


The Laboratory Supervisor oversees staff and functions in the quality control laboratories. This position supervises and coaches laboratory staff, aligns testing priorities with production goals, reports results, collaborates with other teams, ensures proper procedures are followed and maintains compliance.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Hire, supervise, develop and coach laboratory staff.
  • Plan, schedule, prioritize and assign laboratory work.
  • Create and report Certificates of Authenticity (COAs) and invoices.
  • Report results to relevant parties and ensure proper follow-up as needed.
  • Oversee product release and approval processes.
  • Review testing COAs and initiate Out of Specification (OOS) and batch investigations.
  • Communicate with third party laboratories to facilitate release testing and resolve issues.
  • Review and advise on finished product specifications.
  • Maintain documentation in compliance with Document Control, R&D and Quality Assurance functions, along with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and all other company, federal and state rules and regulations.
  • Support production in prioritization of batch release testing.
  • Analyze, track and report laboratory data and documents and identify opportunities to improve accuracy, precision of testing protocols to support and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS).


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in food science, chemistry, biology or related field.
  • 6 years’ professional laboratory and/or quality control experience.
  • 2 years’ experience and success in leadership, supervision and/or management.
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory practices and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, analytical, communication and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and Outlook.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in science or related field.
  • Manufacturing, Consumer Packaged Goods and/or GMP experience.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.


Physical Requirements

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
