Summary/Objective:  Samtec is seeking an experienced engineer with depth in taking optical and optoelectronic products from concept through volume manufacturing. The successful candidate will have a broad optics background with expertise in optical design, metrology and the application and assembly processes of optical components within a complex optoelectronic system.
The Optics and Opto-Electronics Component  Engineer specializes in the design, development, and application of optics and opto-electronics components in Samtec Optics products. This role is crucial in advancing the successful launch of optoelectronic products at all stages of the product lifecycle and will be integral in the product engineering team shepherding products through the phase gate process to successful launch. The Optics Component Engineer is responsible for evaluating, analyzing, and improving components in Samtec optoelectronic products, working with a combination of theoretical physics, computer-aided design, practical experimentation and metrology in combination with the integration considerations of the optics components at a system level.

The Optics Engineer within the Optics Product Engineering team will collaborate with a broad cross-functional team to transition product designs through validation into production through phase gate processes. They will be the resident expert for the OE functionality of released products, coordinating product improvements and sustainment with a cross-functional team. The successful candidate will be expected to be an effective hands-on contributor in optics engineering to determine and solve highly technical component and process challenges in the product lifecycle.

Essential Functions/ Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with engineering design team to develop and execute validation plans for optical and opto-electronic components (e.g. lenses, VCSELs, drivers…)
  • Work with critical vendors to ensure reliable supply of specified components
  • Contribute to developing specific metrology to ensure appropriate incoming inspection of specified components and to maintain quality of our products
  • Contribute to product development through Design For Manufacturing and Design For Test
  • Join product development teams to ensure that the optoelectronic design is well-documented and has sufficient margin for performance validation, reliability qualification, production ramp, and manufacturing yield.
  • Collaborate with Multidisciplinary Engineering teams to develop and Implement control plans and manufacturing tests to ensure production satisfies market needs.
  • Partner with production and supply chain teams to transition designs into scalable manufacturing processes, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
  • Own design integrity for product after transition from development to production. Maintain the set of product requirements and design artifacts and coordinate engineering change management post product release.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges related to optoelectronic performance.
  • Track engineering orders through product development lifecycle to ensure delivery of new optoelectronic products on schedule and within cost targets
“The responsibilities as defined are intended to serve as a general guideline for this position. Associates may be asked to perform additional tasks depending on strengths and capabilities”
