POSITION PURPOSE
Responsible for acquiring, developing, and managing larger and more complex commercial banking relationships in support of SAFE Credit Union’s Commercial Lending strategy. This role executes an integrated sales, service, and relationship management approach by leveraging SAFE’s full suite of commercial lending, deposit, and treasury solutions to develop, retain, and responsibly manage a portfolio of business members. The Senior Business Relationship Manager is accountable for business development, credit analysis and structuring, relationship management, and ongoing portfolio and credit risk oversight to ensure portfolio quality, policy adherence, and consistently high-quality member experience. The position collaborates closely with internal partners and external referral sources to meet SAFE’s strategic objectives, optimize return to member, and preserve the safety and soundness of the credit portfolio.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
- Identify, develop, and manage commercial relationships through a disciplined sales and relationship management process that includes targeted prospecting, calling strategies, and regular follow-up activities.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for complex credit relationships and transactions, including construction, renovation, and higher-risk or special credit situations, ensuring timely reporting, monitoring, and issue resolution.
- Act as the primary liaison between business members and Credit Administration/Portfolio Management to ensure timely financial reporting, annual reviews, covenant compliance, and sound credit administration.
- Monitor assigned loan portfolios for performance trends, policy exceptions, and emerging risks; proactively engage with borrowers and internal partners to mitigate credit concerns.
- Participate in negotiation and management of past-due loans, workouts, and default situations in partnership with Credit Administration and Loan Servicing.
- Review applications and supporting credit information to assess overall credit viability and provide clear, well-documented recommendations to Credit Administration.
- Communicate credit decisions, including declinations, to members and prospects in accordance with SAFE policies and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and maintain a strong understanding of SAFE’s credit policies, underwriting standards, and risk guidelines to ensure consistent application and compliance.
- Partner cross-functionally with credit, operations, retail, and treasury management teams to deliver timely, coordinated solutions and an optimal member experience.
- Optimize portfolio profitability and member value by focusing on high-quality, relationship-based lending and deposit opportunities.
- Provide product expertise and consultative guidance to business members, delivering creative, compliant financial solutions aligned with their operating needs.
- Develop annual business plans for assigned portfolios that include loan growth, deposit growth, and relationship deepening objectives.
- Recommend, establish, and maintain relationships with external referral partners and centers of influence to support ongoing business development efforts.
- Monitor market conditions, industry trends, and regulatory or policy changes that may impact portfolio performance or business member needs.
- Create community and market awareness of SAFE’s business banking products and services through networking, events, and outreach activities.
- Ensure job duties are performed within established controls, risk, and audit protocols.
- Properly adhere to SAFE’s compliance policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Knowledge:
Ten or more years of commercial banking experience, with demonstrated skills in building and maintaining business relationships, as well as commercial credit underwriting. Broad knowledge of the banking industry, with emphasis on business.
