Automation & Controls Engineer

PRIMARY EMPLOYMENT OBJECTIVES
The Automation & Controls Engineer is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting and improving automated systems and processes related to our manufacturing plant including: injection molding, lens coating, inspection, etching, shaping and materials handling, robotics, as well as other automated systems as assigned. This position is critical to ensuring safe and continued operations of all associated equipment in support of military grade protective eyewear manufacturing.
 
SPECIFIC ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 
 
  • Responsible for generating wiring schematics and control drawings, use of CAD, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Draftsight, 
  • Provide technical support for related equipment and process improvement projects as they relate to operational efficiency, safety and machinery performance both electrical and mechanical. 
  • Analyze, evaluate and correct problems through identification of root causes of machine malfunctions and implementation of corrective actions to ensure improved reliability and safety. 
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records of machine malfunctions, anomalies, root cause/ corrective actions and process improvements. 
  • Develop operational procedures and work instructions to ensure safe operation of systems and processes. 
  • Work closely with maintenance personnel and contracted services to ensure timely and effective equipment service and upgrade projects and PM activities. 
  • Work with other engineers and maintenance personnel to troubleshoot equipment and process, and make changes, upgrades, repairs and perform installation as necessary.   
  • Work with suppliers, contractors and internal procurement agents for parts, documentation, service and manage multi-functional projects of various sizes. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
Knowledge, Skill & Experience Requirements  
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electro-mechanical Engineering or the equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • 5+ years Electrical and Controls engineering experience in a manufacturing environment. 
  • Knowledge of NEC and NFPA Electrical Codes. 
  • Experience in an IEC 61131-3 programming Environment (Codesys). 
  • Experience with Industrial communication buses i.e. AS-I Bus, Interbus, and Ethernet. 
  • Experience with programmable logic control (PLC), human-machine interface (HMI) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software, pc-based control, distributed control systems (DCS), CNC, motion control, robotics, machine control, vision systems, motor drives, and manufacturing execution systems (MES). 
  • Experience specifying, maintaining, programming robotic automation and motion control, including multi-axis robots and system integration.  
  • Must have a strong knowledge in basic sensors: Pressure transmitters, flow transmitters, Limit Switches, Proximity switches, Optical sensors, Bar code Systems, Current and Voltage Isolators. 
  • Must have a strong background in AC and DC Motors; understand Motor Torque, HP and how to control speeds. 
  • Must have experience in AC and DC Drives, understand PID Loops and flow control. 
  • Understanding of electrical and mechanical prints, schematics, manuals, for various types of manufacturing equipment systems. Electrical and mechanical system and component level trouble shooting skills required. 
  • Experience in Allen-Bradley PLC controls programming languages such as, SFC, Function Blocks, Structured Text and Rockwell Ladder logic, networks and Profibus. 
  • Several years engineering project leadership experience preferred. 
  • Ability to manage pressure within a fast-paced work environment, flexibility to support critical production schedules.  
  • Support Mechanical, Process, and Maintenance engineering projects as needed. 
  • Knowledge of Design of Experiments practices is a plus. 
  • Competent using basic MS Office applications (MS Excel, MS Project, Word, PowerPoint, etc.). 
  • Take self-directed project lead for systems integration of automated processes. 
  • Must have effective verbal and written communication skills.  
  • U.S. Government authorization required.
