Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for utilizing established engineering principles in the design and evaluation of mechanical components. They will design, create, and repair mechanical components or sub-assemblies using applied mechanical engineering principles, including solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer. May be involved in broader mechanical system design at higher levels. They will create prototypes and conduct testing to ensure design performs as expected. They will work with fabrication and manufacturing departments to ensure final design is properly executed in the creation of mechanical products. Create and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics. Use drafting tools or computer-aided design (CAD)/drafting equipment and software in design work. May manage project schedules and budgets. May evaluate the cost and maintenance requirements of design. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering technology, mathematics, physics, or related field. As a Senior Engineer, they will also oversee the work of other more junior engineers, mentoring as needed. While the role is primarily technical, the position requires some managing of projects too, as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities.

  • Develops mechanical and electromechanical products by studying customer requirements; researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials; soliciting observations from operators
  • Creates engineering documentation and drawings with adequate, cost effective geometric dimensioning and tolerances
  • Coordinates and collaborates with team members on new and existing design activities
  • Makes decisions based on unit objectives, as well as company policy and procedures
  • Promotes teamwork, cooperation, and commitment to meeting customer driven timelines among team members
  • Develops manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for fabricating, building, assembly, and installation of components
  • Assures system and product quality by designing testing methods; testing finished- product and system capabilities; confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes
  • Promotes open communication and provides technical guidance to junior level engineers
  • May perform similar work as that assigned to other team members
  • Up to 10% domestic travel required
  • Potential opportunity for some international travel in the future

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college in Mechanical Engineering
  • 6 - 9 years professional experience
