Principal Data Scientist - Ziff Media Group

At Ziff Media Group we believe that gaining valuable insights using our data is core to our future success. Our Data Science team is seeking a Principal Data Scientist to drive search-oriented modeling and automated language processing to make savings opportunities more discoverable by consumers.

The data science team at Ziff Media Group (RetailMenot,, Mashable, PCMag) leverages data to optimize key business metrics and enable smarter experiences. We build, test and iterate on ML models, learning from and leveraging datasets with millions of daily visits. As part of the Data Science team you will work together with software engineers, data scientists and data engineers leveraging the latest technology, bringing new ideas to the table, and helping improve the world’s largest savings destination. Some of the technologies that we use today include AWS (EMR), Spark, Docker, Luigi. 

In this role you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of data scientists, software engineers, data engineers, business analysts, product managers, and other internal customers to find the best opportunities to apply data science in RetailMeNot's business. You will lead key initiatives through development, iterative experimentation, and productization of winning solutions. We can provide you access to large-scale master and analytics data sets; in return you will see the application and impact of your work to millions of users.

Who You Are

  • You have an MS/PhD in NLP, computational linguistics, machine learning, applied mathematics, or related quantitative field or equivalent self-study
  • You have a deep knowledge of natural language processing, text mining and statistics
  • Have a track record of building scalable and robust personalized search engines preferably in the retail space
  • You bring specific experience in Neural Networks, preferably RNNs, LSTMs and Deep Learning
  • You have experience with Topic Modeling, Parsing, Semantic Composition and Relationship Extraction
  • Experience in productization of machine learning algorithms
  • You have the ability to apply a pragmatic approach to problem solving, establishing conceptual connections to data sources, understanding relationships among data, and comfort with uncertainties/approximations
  • You have great communication and collaboration skills
  • Work well with ambiguity and are a curious individual, always striving to learn about the latest developments in this space
  • Are excited by the idea of mentoring junior engineers/scientists on data science techniques, process, and new technologies while establishing best practices
  • Have experience with DAG schedulers (Luigi, Airflow etc.) and cloud platforms (AWS and/or GCP); Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker is a plus
  • Experience with big data frameworks such as Spark and proficient in languages such as Scala, and/or Python, SQL

What You'll Do

  • You'll mentor junior engineers/scientists on data science techniques, process, and new technologies
  • You will use machine learning and NLP techniques to design and develop system for search, recommendations and attribute extraction
  • You will design and implement scalable algorithms and models, as well as repeatable workflows
  • You will develop and code software programs, algorithms and automated processes to interpret unstructured textual data from various sources and contexts
  • You will communicate effectively to different audiences, both technical and non-technical, through good storytelling and data visualization

This is a remote/office based position which may be performed anywhere in the United States except for within the state of Colorado.
