The Position

The O&M Specialist Technician is a key technical role providing support to the RES O&M division. The overall purpose is to provide support and fault troubleshooting on solar PV and battery storage plants where the specialist systems listed below are involved.

The specialist systems include:

  • SCADA equipment such as sensors, dataloggers, interfaces
  • Site communication networks including RS232, RS485, Modbus, CANbus, ethernet, fibre, WiFi 
  • Site communication providers (4G, fibre, satellite, etc.)
  • Network devices such as servers, modems, routers and switches
  • Security devices including alarm panels, CCTV cameras and digital video recorders

The role will be primarily office/home-based, carrying out remote troubleshooting and diagnosis. There will be the need to undertake site visits in the UK as necessary. Occasional travel outside of the country for training courses and conferences may also be required. Some work outside standard office hours may be required when necessary to support the service.

We are looking for candidates who have an interest in renewables. Candidates are not expected to have knowledge of all of the above areas, but a strength in one or two areas would be an advantage as training will be provided for the right candidate.

Accountabilities

Reporting to the O&M Specialist Engineer, you will:

  • Prepare scopes of work for the preventive maintenance to be carried out by the wider O&M team on-site.
  • Perform remote preventive maintenance on the specialist systems.
  • Undertake troubleshooting and rectification of faults on the specialist systems.
  • Contribute to the internal knowledge base in relation to specialist systems and share knowledge across the team.
  • Improve RES’ capability in relation to technical competence and implement contingency plans and spare parts provision to reduce plant downtime.
  • Identify and propose upgrades to the specialist systems (considering redundancy and reliability)
  • Undertake administration tasks related to communication and security services.
  • Write up reports for clients as necessary.
  • Support other RES departments as required.
  • Any other duties in relation to specialist systems as required by the business needs.

Knowledge

Technical knowledge or a strong interest in the relevant technology areas:

  • Computer systems
  • Communication systems

Experience

Troubleshooting experience with one or more of the following would be advantageous:

  • SCADA
  • CCTV
  • Networking

Skills and Attributes

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, fluent written and spoken English
  • Problem-solving
  • Passion, Accountability, Collaboration, and Excellence

Qualifications

  • Full UK driving licence
  • Degree or NVQ in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent industrial experience, would be an advantage but not essential
