Summary: 

The Controller is the senior accounting leader responsible for the accuracy, integrity, compliance and timeliness of the company’s financial records and reporting. The scope of this role oversees $1B business, covering the USA and Canada. This role owns all accounting operations, establishes robust internal controls, and serves as the primary guardian of the balance sheet. The Controller provides executive leadership with solid, timely financial information and proactive balance sheet risk management to drive informed strategic decisions. In addition, the Controller is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing tax operations, treasury functions, ERP integration, and strategic initiatives ensuring robust internal controls. This role will require 5 days in office.

 

Requirements:   

  • Directs all Americas accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, fixed assets (with tracking, safeguarding, and minimum quarterly physical counts), revenue recognition, USD/CAD consolidations, and complex month-end/year-end closes.
  • Serves as technical accounting and tax expert, ensuring timely, accurate financial statements and regulatory filings compliant with U.S. GAAP, Canadian GAAP/IFRS (as applicable), and federal, state/provincial, and local tax regulations.
  • Develops and executes Americas accounting and tax strategies aligned with organizational priorities, including tax planning, structuring, and optimization for U.S./Canadian operations; oversees tax/financial due diligence and post-transaction integration for M&A/divestitures, identifying risks, liabilities, and opportunities while ensuring U.S./Canadian compliance.
  • Delivers actionable financial and tax insights/recommendations to the CFO and executive team.
  • Designs, implements, monitors, and enhances internal controls and risk-mitigation frameworks to manage balance sheet risks (liquidity, credit, reserves, contingencies) and safeguard financial integrity.
  • Serves as primary liaison to external auditors, tax advisors, and U.S./Canadian regulators; leads year-end audits for efficient, clean outcomes.
  • Drives process improvements, automation, and efficiency in accounting, tax, reporting, and controls; leads ERP/system implementations and post go-live stabilization and improvements, including integrations aligning accounting, tax, and cross-functional processes.
  • Builds, leads, and develops high-performing Americas accounting/tax teams, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, high-accountability culture.
  • Collaborates with FP&A, Treasury, Legal, and other functions to boost financial transparency, tax efficiency, and regulatory adherence.
  • Leads CFO-directed special projects, including M&A integration, tax optimization, and financial system transformations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; active CPA certification (or equivalent), required.
  • 12+ years progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years as Controller/Assistant Controller in public accounting (Big 4/large regional) or public company, required.
  • MBA or Master of Accountancy in Accounting/Finance, preferred.
  • Background in energy, construction, or project-based industries, with proven track record in balance sheet management, risk mitigation, multi-currency reporting, and project accounting. 
  • Deep expertise in U.S. GAAP, IFRS, complex topics, financial reporting, consolidations, and internal controls. 
  • Strong leadership in building/mentoring high-performing accounting/tax teams. 
  • Advanced proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, IFS), including 1+ years leading implementations, post-go-live stabilization/improvements, tax due diligence, and compliance, required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau). 
  • Willingness to travel 5-15% domestically/internationally. 
  • Strategic leadership in accounting/tax projects (e.g., M&A due diligence, tax compliance, local law adherence, post-transaction integration); exceptional project management for process improvements and cross-functional collaboration (FP&A, Treasury, Tax, Legal). 
  • Strong business acumen: interpreting contracts/tax implications and synthesizing complex data into actionable insights for executives, auditors, and stakeholders. 
  • Multi-National operations experience, preferred.
  • Core competencies: accountability, strategic partnerships, business acumen, ethics/integrity, managing vision/purpose.

 

Anticipated base salary range: $217,000 - $271,000

 

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. This position is bonus eligible.
