Associate Director, Preclinical Sciences Lead, Autoimmunity/Tolerance

Research & Development Cambridge, Massachusetts

Description

Company Overview

Repertoire Immune Medicines is a clinical-stage biotechnology company working to unlock and direct the remarkable power of the human immune system to prevent or treat cancer, as well as autoimmune and infectious disease.  The company is founded on the belief that the repertoire of T cell receptor (TCR)-antigen codes that drive health and disease represents one of the greatest opportunities for innovation in medical science.  Repertoire scientists created and developed the DECODE and DEPLOY suite of technologies, which allow in-depth characterization of TCR-antigen pairs, and the ability to rationally design and develop novel targeted immune medicines.

From its sites in Cambridge, Mass., and Zurich, Switzerland, Repertoire’s team of more than 120 is creating a new category of immune medicines enabled from its DECODE discovery platform.  The company’s first product in the clinic is a novel multiclonal T cell therapy consisting of T cells derived from the peripheral blood, activated against a curated set of antigens, and armed with a proprietary cytokine.  Repertoire is in clinical-stage immuno-oncology development today, targeting metastatic solid tumors.  In the field of autoimmunity, Repertoire is currently using its proprietary platform to discover novel epitopes and TCRs from patients with type 1 diabetes.  The company is also using its DECODE platform to discover infectious disease antigens and responding T cell clones.

Role Overview

Repertoire is looking for an experienced and independent Associate Director to join us as a preclinical science team leader in our autoimmune tolerance platform group.  The successful candidate will provide thought leadership and manage a team of in vivo and in vitro scientists in establishing and employing insightful models towards the demonstration of novel antigen specific therapies for the treatment of autoimmune disease.  This is a key role that will help drive the value of our proprietary DECODETM discovery engine via an indispensable contribution to the development of novel therapeutics.

Reporting directly to the head of the autoimmune tolerance platform group, the candidate will lead the preclinical sciences team, working closely with the rest of the tolerance platform group, which includes a nanotechnology team that is responsible for therapeutic technology development, as well as the discovery leads that are responsible for discovery and validation of T cell targets in autoimmune diseases.  Significant opportunities for innovation exist, both in identifying the immune regulatory strategies necessary to achieve tolerance in antigen specific T cell modulation, as well as in establishing the mechanism of action of novel tolerizing therapies.

Additional integrations and interfaces will be across the broader DECODETM technology ecosystem and into adjacent technology teams working on Repertoire’s other therapeutic modalities.  Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills along with experimental rigor and scientific curiosity are key!  The ability to work in a matrixed team environment and adaptability to evolving priorities are a must.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take the lead on preclinical sciences for the development of autoimmune directed antigen specific therapeutic modalities.  Contribute to developing project/program strategy and lead the implementation and execution of that strategy.  Engage as a core team member working closely with technology and antigen discovery teams.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for murine pharmacology models for the autoimmune tolerance platform, establishing new models as needed either internally or externally.
  • Lead efforts for the identification and screening of immunomodulatory payloads to modulate APCs and T cells.
  • Establish transgenic mouse models to support the in vivo validation of autoimmune T cell epitopes discovered via our DECODETM discovery engine.
  • Contribute to cross functional efforts to research, evaluate, and prioritize therapeutic disease areas for internal candidate development.
  • Prepare presentations for internal and external stakeholders discussions.
  • Be an active participant in building the company and group culture.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Ph.D. in Immunology, Autoimmune Biology, or adjacent disciplines.
  • 8+ years post graduate experience in biotech/pharma industry or academia (experience in industry is strongly preferred).
  • Extensive hands-on experience with murine pharmacology models.  Familiarity with transgenic humanized mouse models and autoimmune disease models is a significant plus.  Familiarity with antigen specific T cell models is a plus.
  • Experience with drug discovery and preclinical drug development practices from discovery to IND.
  • Experience leading teams of scientists including Ph.D. level staff and beyond.
  • Strong leadership, personal organizational, multi-tasking, and communication skills.
  • Balance creativity and science with delivery on key milestones within defined timelines.

Repertoire is committed towards social responsibility and developing an inclusive culture.  Much as the power of the immune system lies in the diversity of T and B cells, we believe that our work requires the creativity and ingenuity of a diverse workforce, and we are committed to pursuing that in all facets of the work experience at Repertoire.  We will continue to educate ourselves about the inequities and barriers present in our society and act as a company where we can make a difference.

Repertoire is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer.
