Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:  Applies specialized knowledge of solutioning principles and technology to select sales opportunities with moderate to high MRR potential and a specific technology need.  Is regarded as an expert inside of Rackspace in a domain applicable to the solutioning team.  Works in close collaboration with the sales team and primary Solutions team contact to design specific and innovative components of an overall solution.  Leads internal efforts to build credibility within specific technologies as they apply to the Solutions team.


  • KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITY: Specialized technical knowledge in SAP/BI with ability to quickly learn new concepts.   Maintains strong knowledge of the entire Rackspace portfolio.  Deep and focused knowledge on products and services within their specialty domain, including expertise that extends beyond the Rackspace portfolio.  Recognized within Rackspace for their proven extensive technical knowledge within a specific domain (Cloud, Security, DevOps, etc.).  Demonstrated success in positioning Rackspace against our competition.  Excellent attention to detail, communication skills (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.  Ability to prioritize deals, training, and initiatives through highly effective time management.  Excellent problem solving, analytical, presentation, and whiteboarding skills.  Track record of success working through technical challenges requiring specialty knowledge within enterprise organizations.  Track record of success dealing with ambiguity (internal and external) and working collaboratively with other departments and organizations to solve challenging problems.  Advanced knowledge and thought leadership on technology and industry trends that affect hosting decisions for enterprise organizations.

JOB COMPLEXITY:  Leads customer workshops to educate on specific technologies and concepts.   Elevates the rest of the solutions team in their area of expertise.  Supplemental resource on highly specialized customer engagements that require advanced guidance on specific technologies or concepts.  Evaluates customer needs and provides customer with direction on technical concepts that solve for current and future challenges.  Full understanding of the tools of the solutioning trade (Salesforce, Proposal Tools, Technology Sizing Tools).  Responsible for associated activities such as capturing notes and activities in Salesforce and managing the deal pipeline.  Recognizes buying signs, compelling events, and decision makers.  Foresees potential technical and business customer objections early in the sales cycle.   Overcomes concerns and lowers customer risk to selecting Rackspace.  As a Trusted Advisor, with deep understanding of the customer's business, uncovers both overt and latent pains specific to their specialty domain expertise

  • SUPERVISION: Determines methods and procedures on new assignments with little instruction.  Influence is beyond their personal role and leads projects with impact across multiple Rackspace teams, including but not limited to the Solutions and Sales teams.  Provides mentorship to fellow Solution team members.
  • EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or Business required.  Requires 7+ years' solutions engineering experience or specialty domain experience with proven track record.  Sales training & advanced technical training across multiple technologies within a single domain (Cloud, Security, DevOps, etc.).  At least TWO industry certifications required: Linux+, RHCSA, RHCE, MCSE, MCSA, MCITP, CCNA, OpenStack, Cloud Savvy.  At least ONE top tier technical certifications in a highly desired technology domain.  Additional Business focused and Rackspace product certifications highly desired.  Experience may substitute for the degree requirement at a rate of 3 years experience for 1 year of education.  High school diploma or equivalent required.
