Tell us about your career journey.

I completed my engineering and worked for JPMC as a consultant for three years. I then decided to get a Masters and completed my MBA from Virginia Tech. Got placed with Rackspace through a campus recruitment drive and joined the Email hosting team as a quality engineer. It has been 7 years since. Currently I am a technical product manager for Microsoft Office 365, one of the fastest growing products at Rackspace.

Why should someone join your team?

Our team is made up of individuals that are smart and collaborative. They respect each other’s opinions when making decisions which I think is very important in a team. Our team is working on simplifying the Microsoft Office

365 experience for our customers. This is a complex product but my team members are proven performers and passionately work together to deliver quality products on time.

We hear you are a member of POWER at Rackspace. Can you tell us a bit more?

POWER (Professional Organization for Women’s Empowerment at Rackspace) is a Racker Resource Group that provides women at Rackspace growth opportunities, access to senior leaders, and opportunities for internal and external recognition. How did you find Rackspace?

In a previous role I was a happy customer of Rackspace, and when I moved to San Antonio I applied for a developer role while exploring the web site for cloud offerings.

Tell us a bit about your career journey.

I was hired into web team within Marketing as a software developer to work on www.rackspace.com and various other customer-facing web properties. Over the years I have been promoted to senior levels of software developer, and eventually was nominated and selected to join the advanced technical leadership program at Rackspace known as the Technical Career Track (TCT).

Oh really? Tell us a bit more about the Technical Career Track (TCT) at Rackspace.

TCT is designed to attract, retain, and

grow technical talent, offering technical individual contributors a non-people-management career path and leadership. TCT Rackers are exposed to a broader range of business problems, opportunities, and senior leadership. They are embedded within their Business Units, solving tough, technical challenges that enable the goals of their BU and the business strategy as a whole.

  • Paul G.

    Technical Support Team Lead
4 year Racker | Cardiff, UK

"If you compare Rackspace to other companies that offer a similar service, there is so much opportunity here, it's unreal."

    Paul G.

Technical Support Team Lead | 4 year Racker | Cardiff, UK

What do you look for when hiring Network Security members to your team?

Technically, I look for Cisco, F5, Juniper and Checkpoint mainly, but I also look for energetic, excited, and dynamic people with a real passion and drive for what they do.

Describe your team in 3 words.

3? Can I have more? I would say, hardworking, dedicated and progressive. They're a brilliant team to work with.

What should someone expect of you as a leader?

Rackers should expect clarity, consistency, honesty and respect. The team does an incredible job working so hard on everything they do, and they consistently deliver good, high quality work that often exceeds my expectations. It's only right that they're given the responsibility

that they deserve. They would probably say that you should expect free food!

Every quarter, the team gets a ‘fun budget’ – money to do something as a team. What would your ideal fun budget event be?

I'd like to send them away to have a go in a Seabreacher. One of the team showed it to me, I think hinting that he'd like a go. It's like a 2 seater boat that looks like a shark, that can dive under the water for a few seconds and then launches up through the water. I've just found out that the new one has an iPod dock, so you can listen to your own tunes. Winner!

If you could meet anyone in real life who would it be and why?

Are we allowed to use people that have passed away? I'd like to meet J.R.R.

Tolkien. I'm a massive nerd and his work has influenced so many of the films, books and games that I am interested in.

Why would a Network Security Professional want to work at Rackspace?

I think that Rackspace offers so much. There's training, development, automation, a wide range of customers to work with, everything is different every day. There's a real sense of togetherness with everyone I've worked with, and I'm really excited by the future. If you compare Rackspace to other companies that offer a similar service, there is so much opportunity here, it's unreal. I get to work with the most talented, driven and genuinely engaged people, and I'm keen to see this continue. We're undergoing a few changes, but we're all really excited about the future.

What is a day in the life of a Support Tech like?

Describe your team in 3 words.

    Enthusiastic, fun and honest.

What advice would you give to those looking for their next job?

Given that every day we see a new technology released, it’s really important to keep updated so that you can be prepared for any challenge that may come your way. Always give extra to the goals you would like to accomplish. Never take anything for granted!
