Product Architect - VMware

The VMware Product Engineering team is a senior team of VMware experts responsible for designing and implementing new VMware products at Rackspace. The team works closely with teams in Development, Product Management and Product Operations to deliver upgrades to existing VMware products at Rackspace and manage the lifecycle of these products from a deeply technical perspective. VMware Product Engineers are responsible for designing upgrades to the largest hosted VMware environment in the world, including touchpoints at every stage of business process from pre- sales, through implementation, billing and support.


The core role is to manage, sustain and improve all technical aspects of several VMware product lines, leveraging deep expertise to improve the competitive position of VMware products at Rackspace. Identify and deliver against specific, assigned tasks on projects related to VMware product development. Develop, perform and manage the execution of various lab tasks—executing tests, building systems, troubleshooting, etc. Deliver assigned tasks on multiple concurrent projects and contribute to technical planning across the VMware product portfolio.



Key Responsibilities


  • Follow and maintain a standard framework for Architecture development that is consistently agreed and applied across the VMware Practice Area, using standard methods adopted from industry best practice (TOGAF/ ADM/ VCAP-DCD, etc.). There is an expectation to be familiar with VMware’s validated designs catalogue and methodology and vCAT v3 for Service Providers (vCloud Architecture Toolkit).
  • Solid technical skills and an expert in everything VMware- related, both current and emerging. You should also be highly proficient in storage, networks, infrastructure and security with a good understanding of how APIs function end- to- end and a basic understanding of a current software programming language such as Python.
  • Effectively translate business requirements into technical solutions by leading the new product discovery process, providing insights and recommendations and formalizing feedback in the completion of relevant and useful high and low level design documents. Technical tasks should be broken down and delegated to the Product Engineers and you will be expected to lead the design and integration of robust and secure VMware Virtualization solutions
  • Strong business and commercial acumen, including ownership of cost and profitability metrics for product developments
  • Ensure that security and compliance standards are adhered to in the design and implementation of new product deployments and the systems as a whole, and offer contributions towards the ever- increasing need for more stringent standards. You are expected to have a basic understanding of some common industry frameworks such as SOX, PCI etc.
  • Major incidents relating to Product releases will remain to be the ultimate responsibility of the Architect group to resolve. Such issues need to be treated with an appropriate level of urgency, with the priority being full solution availability for our customers
  • Provide training for relevant teams on new product releases (including obtaining sign- off from departmental leaders). Quarterly training sessions and/ or presentations to the business are expected
  • Provide input and oversight for the development and maintenance of product architecture, customer handbook and operational support documentation. Work with Technical Writers to ensure delivery of comprehensive, technically accurate and easy to understand written outputs
  • Effective, confident communication to Director Level and above on key projects and initiatives, demonstrating the ability to influence and negotiate across Rackspace
  • Assisting pre- sales with complex engagements and act as the gatekeeper for custom solutions that could harm the customer experience and/ or the Rackspace brand. The one- off approval process (owned by Operations) must be followed and feedback provided on this process where opportunities present themselves
  • Collaboration with all relevant teams, awareness of roadmap items, dates and deliverables. Consistent, regular updates and use of project tracking tools/ systems. Attendance and meaningful contributions to regular inter- departmental meetings
  • Proactive participation in the mentoring of junior colleagues from across Rackspace, assisting with the development of career plans and demonstration of progress against their completion

  • Develop strong working relationships with appropriate VMware representatives
    • Identify opportunities to collaborate
    • Gain insight into both strategic and technical future developments
  • Ownership of vendor engagements, in collaboration with Product Managers, to assess the viability of new competitive offerings and their potential integration with Rackspace systems, tools and processes
  • Community thought leadership and work to become a recognized industry expert
    • Commercial involvement with vMUGs, vForums, VMworld and any other purposeful opportunities to engage with customers, prospects and the wider community
    • Other presentations and technical (or non- technical) Q&A
    • Assisting Marketing with blogs, webinars, white papers and any other meaningful initiatives to build external brand
  • Effective sharing of workload and responsibilities with peers. Engage in healthy discussions and debates that facilitate trust, accountability, teamwork and the sharing of knowledge
  • Project/ change completion and effective management, which would include:
    • Scoping against requirements
    • Delivery of milestones
    • Identification of stakeholders
    • Effective communication
    • Delegation and handovers
    • Project sign- off
    • Documentation
  • Current certification to VCAP level or above.
