Rackspace in Sydney are looking for a high end DevOps Engineer to deliver DevOps and other technical consulting projects. The DevOps Engineer will serve as a subject matter expert for our DevOps Professional Services and will be involved in Pre-Sales and delivery of DevOps and other technical Professional Services engagements.

The right individual for this role will have an excellent grasp of cloud computing technologies, development frameworks (such as waterfall, scrum, Kanban), and cloud application design strategies. Candidates will be strong team players, and be comfortable working collaboratively with front-line Sales, Pre-Sales Solution Engineers and Architects and Project Managers.


Your engagements will see you identifying, technically qualifying and delivering opportunities for our DevOps Professional Service customers. You will be required for some projects to work on site with customer resources to deliver the project outcomes.




Applicants will have strong knowledge of the DevOps lifecycle, can describe the business value, and talk confidently about any specific tools / technologies that occupy each bullet below:

  • DevOps Culture
  • Automation: Source Control, Infrastructure Automation, Configuration Management, Testing Automation (CI), Deployment Automation (CD), Circle CI
  • Metrics: Systems Monitoring, Application Monitoring, Log Aggregation
  • Development practices: Waterfall / Agile / Scrum / Kanban


There is also an expectation that the candidate will have hands on expertise in one of the following platforms and relevant services:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS):CloudFormation, Code deploy
  • Microsoft Azure: ARM templates, Visual Studio TeamCity, Docker
  • OpenStack: HEAT templates and related deployment technologies
  • Google; Kubernetes


Applications will have a general working knowledge of the following technology concepts and be able to deploy and troubleshoot the relevant technology stacks:


  • Networking:
    • Hardware vs. software definable networks
    • Load balancing
    • IDS, IPS, WAF
  • Web servers (Apache/nginx/IIS/Tomcat)
  • Traditional (MySQL/MSSQL/Oracle) vs. NoSQL (MongoDB/Hadoop/Redis/ElasticSearch) database technologies
  • Caching & Message Queue technologies (Varnish/Memcache/RabbitMQ/ZeroMQ)
  • Containers (Kubernetes, LXC and Docker)
  • High availability application design
  • Application scaling services and tools (Rightscale, AppFog, Scalr)



  • Work with Rackspace and client stakeholders to gather and document requirements and ensure the requirements solve a customer’s pain point or objective(s) through project outcomes and deliverables. 
  • Responsible for assisting with the preparation of Project Initiation Documents, proposals, RFP/RFI responses and Statements of Work (SoW).  This includes the analysis and development of scope, duration, deliverables, resources, risk, assumptions and dependencies for assigned projects.
  • Works with project managers to ensures that technical projects remain on schedule, within budget, cost and quality tolerances. 
  • Proactively works to identify and manage project risks and issues. Ensures appropriate response plans are developed and executed.
  • Delivers DevOps related projects to customers, often on site with Customer resources.
  • Keeps appropriate people informed of project progress, disseminating information on any problems or potential delays.
  • Contribute to the refinement of the Rackspace Professional Services methodology.
  • Ability to travel as required.



  • 3+ years’ experience in similar DevOps design and delivery roles.
  • Can present concepts in authoritative and clear manner to customers through white boarding, presentations and proposals
  • Tenacious problem solver, will own issues until full resolution
  • Ability to create wow / delighter moments with customers
  • Effective with time management and expected deliverables
  • Exceptional communication skills; both written and verbal with great attention to detail
  • Excellent time management, communications, decision making, presentation, human relations and organization skills.

  • Experience leading technical workshops exploring requirements and mapping solutions.
  • Deep understanding of multiple development practices (able to hold your own in room full of developers).
