Job Title:Maintenance Manager

Responsible to:Plant Manager

Salary Class:6


Primary Objective:To manage the maintenance and engineering functions of all plant assets through the work of others and own work performed.




  1. Direct and develop the staff in the Maintenance Department:

-          Hiring personnel with skills needed

-          Outside education for staff

-          In-house training


  1. Direct and perform maintenance of plant assets:

-Wood drying equipment in Yard

-High-volume wood production equipment in Rough Mill and Machine Room

-              Boiler plant and steam heating system

-              Rolling stock including forklifts, walking lifts, trucks and trailers

-              Dust collection and other support systems

-              Facilities, utility systems, and grounds

-              Electrical system from power company to machinery


  1. Direct maintenance programs:

-Proactive maintenance

-Preventive maintenance

-          Predictive maintenance

-          Corrective and emergency maintenance


  1. Assist plant in the following areas:

-Productivity and throughput enhancement

-Process analysis and optimization

-Bottleneck identification and exploitation

-Setup reduction

-Quality improvement


  1. Direct use of Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).


  1. Assist with designing and implementation of programs for:

-OSHA compliance

-Right To Know compliance


-In case of fire

-In case of tornado

-Environmental compliance

-State boiler regulations

-Working with Company’s insurance carriers

  1. Direct use of outside contractors:

-Electrical contractors

-Building contractors

-Sheet metal contractors (dust collection)

-Maintenance supply vendors


  1. Work closely with all departments, looking for ways to smooth production and solve problems in the following areas:

-Buildings and grounds

-Plant layout and equipment design




-Dust collection

-In-house building of equipment

-Value analysis

-Cost reduction


  1. Offer expertise with new equipment purchases in the following ways:

-Assist on specifications

-Assist on research

-Determine feasibility of installation

-Prepare capital expenditure financial analysis

-Direct installation of new equipment


  1. Direct purchasing of maintenance tools, parts, equipment, and supplies


  1. Take on assignments that arise but are not in any of the above categories


Knowledge & Skills Required


  1. Four-year post-secondary education or applicable experience
  2. Strong organizational and planning skills
  3. Highly motivated
  4. Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
  5. Strong communication skills - written and verbal
  6. Problem-solving ability (Mechanical, Electrical, Hydraulic, and Pneumatic)
  7. Blueprint reading and drafting (CAD)
  8. Basic Financial Principles – Payback Analysis, Negotiation, and Purchasing
  9. Computer Literacy - (Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, and AutoCAD LT)
  10. Machining, welding, fabricating, and mechanical skills
  11. Understanding of progressive manufacturing principles
  12. Chief “C” boilers license (preferred)
