Regional Director, Medical Science Liaisons- Western US

 

Position Summary

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Director will develop, coach and manage the performance of the MSL Team.  He/She will also manage business processes and lead key strategic, cross-functional projects within Portola.

 

This is a field based position dedicated to people management and establishing and maintaining professional relationships with the thought leaders and key internal and external in order to communicate scientific and clinical information in accordance with company guidelines.

 

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise and manage the Regional MSL Team by encouraging MSL development and activities as well as manage both individual and team performance
  • Supervise and manage performance of MSL activities within the field, including face-to-face field visits/meetings when needed, appropriate expense reporting, and completion of midyear and annual written performance evaluations
  • Establish professional relationship with external experts, academic institutions and managed care communities
  • Work with Medical Affairs and MSL team as appropriate on special projects, committee representation, and educational/training activities
  • Work cross functionally with senior leaders to ensure proper alignment of Portola business goals
  • Promote and coordinate Regional MSL participation with cross-functional groups by assigning MSLs activities for MSLs related to Medical Affairs, Clinical Operations, Sales and Marketing
  • Lead and facilitate MSL group discussions and interactions in a constructive fashion to ensure a healthy team dynamic and a positive and enthusiastic work environment
  • Help with the development, drafting, and roll out of company standard operating procedures, guidelines and policy statements affecting Medical Affairs and other departments
  • Serve as a role model for the MSL group and the company, demonstrating leadership and strategic clinical acumen as it relates to Portola’s interests

 

Qualifications

  • PharmD/PhD/MD strongly preferred. Other clinical degrees with appropriate (industry/clinical) experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, or equivalent clinical healthcare experience
  • Must have managerial experience with 3-5 years’ experience managing MSL teams strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience as an MSL in the hospital required
  • Knowledge in the thrombosis, cardiovascular, or internal medicine areas of practice is highly desirable
  • Experience in clinical trial design, logistics, and evaluation is extremely desirable
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as exceptional organization skills
  • Must have the ability to think analytically /conceptually
  • Demonstration of exemplary administrative, communication and time management skills by manager and peers
  • Successful track record managing projects and/or leading teams
  • Must have a strong commercial understanding; knowledgeable in clinical, commercial and regulatory issues affecting the pharmaceutical and managed care industries
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills, as well as exceptional organization skills
  • Must live within assigned geography of role
