Position Summary

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) will perform a key role in the life cycle management of Andexanet alfa and betrixaban through strategic alignment and execution of activities related to investigator and expert outreach, investigator sponsored trials, company sponsored nonregistration trials, and publication planning. As part of the execution of Portola Pharmaceuticals’ strategy, he/she, as a member of Medical Affairs, will work closely with the Clinical Development, Commercial and Marketing functions.



  • Responsible for realization of medical/scientific objectives for the MSL team
  • Participate in objective setting as well as contributing to the professional development for the MSL team
  • Establish professional relationships with external experts, academic institutions and managed care communities
  • Present critical medical and scientific information to the external audiences and individuals (such as formulary committees, medical meetings, and healthcare professionals)
  • Identify unmet medical, educational, and research needs within the medical community, and make an intelligent interpretation of key relevant scientific data and translate this information to meet educational and research needs
  • Collaborate with crossfunctional teams in assessing education/research needs and develop education/research strategies to meet those needs
  • Provide medical and scientific support for internal collaborations, such as sales training, speaker bureau training, and other educational initiatives
  • Assist in the identification of investigators and sites for company trials
  • Serve as a liaison for the review, submission, execution, completion of IIS (Investigator Initiated Studies) proposals and facilitate the initiation of research projects
  • Represent Portola at medical meetings, conferences, advisory boards, outreach meetings at key institutions and in interactions with thought leaders
  • Maintain knowledge of the thrombosis field, stay current on leading edge medicines and development efforts, and provide expertise for business development opportunities as appropriate
  • Assure MSL team compliance with all corporate policies and regulatory guidelines
  • Performs other duties as assigned 



  • Solid background and experience with thrombosis/cardiology/hemostasis, and understanding of drug development and lifecycle development of a product
  • Advanced degree in medical science (MD, PharmD or PhD); 6 years of experience required
  • Typically requires at least 4 years of experience as field MSL with demonstrated excellent communication skills (oral and written); experience in institutional settings preferred   
  • Understanding of the FDA, Pharma Code and other ethical guidelines relevant to the pharmaceutical industry
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with clinical investigators and key opinion leaders in the relevant fields, and to establish trust through the consistent demonstration of scientific expertise and satisfactory followthrough to requests from key opinion leaders
  • Able to articulate ideas and concepts, be persuasive and have the ability to convey complex, scientific ideas fluently to any audience
  • Must utilize effective, professional communications to cultivate and nurture strong working relationships with internal and external colleagues
  • Ability to conduct oneself in a highly professional and ethical manner
  • A thorough understanding of the clinical trial and investigator initiated study processes
  • Ability to multitask, work independently and focus on priorities
  • Must deal with ambiguity and thrive in an everchanging environment
