Position: Maintenance Superintendent – Night Shift
Job Summary:
The Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for leading and coordinating all maintenance operations across multiple shifts, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient performance of plant equipment. This role provides direct leadership over 20 technicians and is accountable for driving execution of preventive maintenance, reducing downtime, and improving overall equipment reliability.
The Superintendent plays a key role in developing team capability by serving as an IMPACT Trainer, promoting accountability, and strengthening technical skills across the workforce. In addition to leadership responsibilities, this position requires hands-on involvement in electrical systems, PLC troubleshooting, and automation support to ensure timely resolution of complex issues.
This role works closely with production, planning, and parts personnel to align maintenance activities with plant goals, enforce safety and compliance standards, and drive continuous improvement in maintenance performance and operational efficiency.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensure timely and effective execution of work orders, preventive maintenance, and breakdown repairs across all assigned areas.
- Provide leadership and oversight for four maintenance crews (20 technician’s total) across multiple shifts.
- Drive strong organizational structure, planning discipline, and time management within the maintenance department.
- Coach, mentor, and develop technicians and leads; enforce standards, accountability, and performance expectations.
- Promote clear and effective communication across shifts, departments, and leadership teams.
- Maintain accurate and consistent maintenance records, shift reports, and system updates (SAP).
- Training, development and technical leadership.
- Serve as an IMPACT Trainer, supporting onboarding and continuous development of maintenance personnel.
- Identify skill gaps and implement training plans to improve mechanical, electrical, and troubleshooting capabilities.
- Provide hands-on support and leadership in automation, electrical systems, and PLC troubleshooting when required.
- Promote a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement within the team.
Minimum Requirements:
Experience
- 8+ years of industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing or food processing environment.
- Experience supporting 24/7 operations or night shift environments strongly preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree on Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
Maintenance, Reliability & Automation
- Drive execution and improvement of preventive maintenance (PM) programs and reliability initiatives.
- Lead and support electrical and PLC troubleshooting efforts, ensuring minimal downtime and proper root cause resolution.
- Partner with planning and parts personnel to ensure effective scheduling, parts availability, and job readiness.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring equipment and automation failures and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure maintenance work is executed in a structured, efficient, and standardized manner.
Safety & Compliance
- Demonstrate and enforce commitment to Pilgrim’s safety culture and food safety standards.
- Ensure strict adherence to GMP, LOTO, and all plant safety policies and procedures.
- Lead by example in promoting a safe work environment across all crews.
- Support incident investigations and ensure timely corrective actions.
Operational Leadership
- Collaborate with production and plant leadership to prioritize maintenance activities and support operational goals.
- Drive improvements in equipment reliability, automation performance, labor efficiency, and plant uptime.
- Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and external resources as needed.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
The Maintenance Superintendent will be measured on, but not limited to:
- PM Compliance: ≥ 90–95% completed on time.
- Work Order Completion Rate: ≥ 90% within scheduled timeframe.
- Equipment Downtime Reduction: Year-over-year improvement in unplanned downtime.
- Breakdown Response Time: Continuous improvement in response and resolution time.
- Schedule Compliance: ≥ 85–90% adherence to planned maintenance schedule.
- Labor Efficiency: Effective utilization of maintenance labor across all crews.
- Safety Performance: Zero recordable incidents and full compliance with safety policies.
- Parts & Inventory Coordination: Improved parts availability and reduced emergency purchases.
- Automation Reliability: Reduction in PLC/electrical-related downtime and improved system stability.
- Training & Development: Documented progress in technician skill development and cross-training.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in food processing or regulated industrial environments.
- Strong experience with electrical systems, PLC troubleshooting, and industrial automation.
- Strong understanding of maintenance planning, CMMS (SAP preferred), and reliability practices.
