Job Purpose
The Emergency Physician provides high-quality, evidence-based emergency and acute care services to patients presenting with acute illness and injury across the full spectrum of acuity. He/she will combine direct clinical service with active contributions to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, clinical supervision of medical students, interns, residents, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, while supporting departmental quality improvement initiatives and research. The Emergency Physician works within a multidisciplinary team from the hospital departments and upholds the hospital's commitment to patient safety, equity of care, and academic excellence.

2 | Specific Responsibilities:
• Assess, diagnose, and manage undifferentiated emergency presentations including resuscitation, trauma, paediatric emergencies, and mental health crises. • Perform and supervise emergency procedures (airway management, intubation, central/arterial line placement, chest drain insertion, cardioversion, lumbar puncture, etc.). • Manage patient flow in the emergency department, prioritising acuity through effective triage, and ensuring timely disposition decisions. • Collaborate with inpatient specialists, surgeons, internal medicine, pediatricians and allied health professionals to facilitate optimal patient outcomes. • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete medical documentation in accordance with hospital standards.
• Supervise and teach medical students, interns rotating through the emergency department. • Mentor junior staff and provide constructive performance feedback aligned with postgraduate training frameworks. • Deliver didactic teaching sessions, case-based discussions, simulation training, and bedside teaching as assigned. • Contribute to curriculum development and competency-based assessment of trainees. • Engage in scholarly activities including clinical research, quality improvement projects, case series, or guideline development.
• Champion patient safety culture and participate in clinical audit, adverse event review, etc • Promote compliance with national clinical protocols, accreditation standards, and infection prevention guidelines. • Contribute to departmental key performance indicators monitoring • Support hospital accreditation processes and emergency department preparedness activities including mass casualty drills. • Identify and escalate clinical risks through appropriate governance channels.
• Act as a resource and role model for professional conduct, clinical reasoning, and communication. • Contribute to departmental strategic planning, policy development, and operational improvement initiatives. • Maintain effective relationships with pre-hospital services, referral hospitals, and community health partners.

Required Qualifications
• Postgraduate specialist qualification in Emergency Medicine (Fellowship, Board Certification, or equivalent national specialist registration) • Minimum 3 years post specialist qualification experience in a busy emergency department. • Demonstrated experience in clinical supervision and teaching of medical trainees. • Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS/ALS) current; ATLS or equivalent trauma certification preferred. • Familiarity with electronic medical records and hospital information systems. • Demonstrated team- building and facilitation skills. • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. • Strong communication, interpersonal and interviewing skills. • Excellent computer skills with proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders. • Ability to conduct basic data analysis. • Fluent in English; knowledge of French and Kinyarwanda is an advantage • Ability to live PIH/IMB values: Ubumuntu-Compassion, Ubupfura-Integrity, Ubunyangamugayo-Honesty, Ubwubahane-Mutual respect, Ubufatanye-Solidarity, Agaciro-Dignity, Kugira ishyaka-Determination. • At Partners In Health, we are committed to ensuring that those who benefit from our work- including our patients, families and community members – as well as our staff are treated with dignity and respect and protected from sexual exploitation, abuse and sexual harassment.
