Position Title: Senior Director, Learning & Impact, PIH-US
Position Classification: Regular; Exempt; Full-Time; 40 hours/week
Reports to: Executive Director, PIH-US
Location: Employees in this role can work from our Boston, MA office, remotely within the U.S. or hybrid of these two options. Some domestic travel within the United States is expected, less than 20%.

PIH-US accompanies visionary public health and community partners working to build strong, integrated, community-led health systems across the U.S. PIH-US currently supports local health departments, health providers, elected officials, and community leaders to define clear health and racial equity agendas and provides technical advising and operational support to deliver on those commitments. Our current focus communities include: Montgomery, Alabama; Immokalee, Florida; Newark, New Jersey; New Bedford, Massachusetts; North Carolina; and Pima County, Arizona. We capture learnings from across this network to mobilize resources, advance policy change, and lay the groundwork for stronger community health systems nationally.
Position Overview
The Senior Director, Learning & Impact plays a key leadership role in building strategies and services to strengthen the effectiveness and impact of PIH-US place-based programming and advising as well as advance PIH’s national thought leadership and advocacy. The Senior Director will operate the in-house strategy function that facilitates internal collaboration and processes necessary to drive effective strategy and deliver outstanding results across the organization. The Senior Director also leads efforts to capture knowledge and facilitate learning across PIH-US programs as well as to disseminate learnings to the broader field—through publications, convenings and lighter-touch technical advising engagements.
The Senior Director oversees the planning and implementation of PIH-US strategies to monitor and evaluate our work and demonstrate our impact, working to both streamline and innovate upon existing systems for data collection and analysis.
The Senior Director will develop innovative approaches that translate PIH-US’ theory of change into actionable strategies that increase the organization’s impact and reach. Additionally, the Senior Director will be responsible for institutionalizing learning pathways and culture in an organization that believes learning is a key function when operating in rapidly evolving and dynamic systems. The Senior Director manages a dynamic team with diverse expertise—ranging from technical advisers with subject matter expertise, to monitoring and evaluation professionals, to strategic planning and facilitation managers. They also work closely with other PIH-US cross-site team leaders, including Advocacy, Communications, and Partnerships to advance PIH-US’s national advocacy agenda, in service of both our place-based programming and the broader national movement for health equity and racial justice.
Responsibilities
Strategy and business development (35%)
- In close collaboration with the Executive Director and other colleagues across PIH-US, lead processes for ongoing development of longer-term PIH-US strategy
- Engage in co-design of programs and funding proposals in service of PIH-US learning agenda and thought leadership efforts
- Co-design and manage lighter-touch technical advising (TA) engagements with government and program partners that offer impactful channels to promote PIH thought leadership in communities beyond our 6 place-based programs
- Lead identification of opportunities for deeper cross-site collaboration and shared needs for additional expertise and support in specific community and public health domains
- Facilitate engagement of outside advisers and experts to deepen PIH-US subject matter knowledge and sharpen strategy
Monitoring, evaluation, and impact (25%)
- Oversee the development and implementation of systems for organization-wide monitoring & evaluation, working closely with the Executive Director, Impact Lead, and Impact Manager to promote innovation and continuous improvement across PIH-US sites.
- Liaise with Partnerships team, Executive Director, Finance, and Impact Lead to structure evaluation plans and set milestones for a range of public and private funding opportunities
- Facilitate development of a PIH-US research agenda and work with PIH-US program and team leads to explore avenues to generate new knowledge and advance the field
Learning, knowledge management and thought leadership (20%)
- Develop and steward PIH-US learning agenda by identifying emerging trends, key questions, and insights across TA sites
- Lead development of compelling materials and convenings that disseminate PIH-US learnings and promote PIH thought leadership with technical, program and community partners; facilitate collaboration among program/site leads, communications, and advocacy teams to deliver on key thought leadership outputs
- Manage external communications to advance strategic goals, ensure compelling and coherent messaging, aligned with organizational identity and values, which expands engagement with PIH-US thought leadership, advocacy campaigns and programs
- Build processes and systems to facilitate internal knowledge sharing within PIH-US and document best practices emerging from our work as well as in the broader field
Management and team leadership (20%)
- Lead and mentor Learning & Impact team of 5-8 direct reports
- Manage short-term consultants and adviser engagement in support of PIH-US learning objectives
- Serve as a key member of the PIH-US leadership team, ensuring strategic and operational alignment across U.S. TA, learning, advocacy and communications programming and activities
Qualifications
Required:
- Master’s degree in public health or related discipline, or equivalent work experience of 4 years in those fields
- 8-10 years of professional experience in public health, nonprofit management, health program implementation, and/or consulting, including experience managing a team
- Demonstrated success managing strong collaboration and relationship building within and across teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to concisely communicate complex ideas in a manner that builds buy-in among diverse stakeholders
- Excellent people development skills, able to help diverse team members rapidly improve skills and performance through coaching and consistent supportive accountability
- Ability to work independently and effectively in high-pressure, fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities
- Exceptional diplomatic and interpersonal skills and ability to build strong professional relationships with diverse stakeholders in a challenging environment
- Strategically minded, able to think creatively around program objectives and the detailed steps necessary to achieve these goals
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills and qualitative and quantitative analytical capabilities
- Entrepreneurial spirit demonstrated through prior experience working in start-up like environments building new teams or programs and flexibility in the face of rapidly evolving scope of work and new challenges
- Sound judgment and ability to handle confidential information with discretion
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice, health equity and racial equity
Preferred:
- Management consulting or advisory services experience
- Experience working in the US public health and/or healthcare systems
- Experience implementing or helping to manage strategic planning processes

Pay and Benefits
The expected starting salary range for new hires in this position is between $140,000-150,000/year and may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market for the position, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The position belongs to a class of roles that have a salary range between $120,000 and $160,000/year. Subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable plans then in effect, eligible employees may enroll in a 401(k) plan with employer match, as well as participate in organization-sponsored medical, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability insurance, and basic life insurance plans for the employee and the employee’s eligible dependents. Full time employees will receive 15 days of vacation, 12 sick days, 3 personal days, and 3 volunteer days in addition to paid time off during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, the week of July 4th, and 11 additional holidays annually.
