Title: Communications Specialist

Reports to: Deputy Executive Director, PIH Liberia

Location: Maryland County, Liberia

 

General Responsibilities

Partners In Health (PIH) seeks a creative, social justice-oriented professional to lead communications for a growing organization. The Communications Specialist will work with PIH colleagues and external partners around the world to broaden and deepen support for PIH by articulating PIH’s leadership and value-add, and by cultivating trust in PIH’s capacity to deliver results.

By celebrating the organization’s unique mission and values, showcasing its pioneering accomplishments, and promoting its valuable brand, the Communications Specialist works in collaboration with the PIH Liberia Executive Leadership Team to drive forward PIH Liberia’s communications, including through fundraising campaigns, local media engagement, in-country partner engagement, internal communications, and other communications initiatives.

As a collaborator with the Global Marketing-Communications team in Boston, the Communications Specialist creates and curates compelling, timely content to advance the global marketing-communications strategy, and acts as a key link between PIH’s work in Liberia and PIH’s Global Marketing-Communications team in Boston.

Global Communications (40%)

In collaboration with the PIH Global Marketing-Communications Team and PIH Liberia Executive Leadership Team:

  • Create, implement, and evaluate a country-specific content strategy and plan to showcase achievements and priorities for PIH Liberia and its partners, in alignment with PIH Liberia’s 5-year strategic plan, and in support of PIH Liberia’s partnerships with the Ministry of Health, donors, and implementing partners.
  • Pitch, write, produce, and revise publications and multimedia pieces, including photo stories, short videos, and infographics, for the organization's print and digital channels, including Facebook, Instagram, and pih.org.
  • Coordinate and facilitate visits and interviews for external communications personnel including government partners, journalists, freelancers, and members of the PIH Global Marketing-Communications team.
  • Manage and maintain a hard drive containing all communications materials, including up-to-date photographs, fact sheets for grant-funded projects, patient information and consent forms, and success stories.

PIH Liberia Internal Engagement (30%)

In collaboration with the PIH Liberia Executive Leadership Team:

  • Develop a communications strategy for internal communications to strengthen communications structures across PIH Liberia departments and in support of local government partners, including but not limited to a monthly newsletter, branding support, and capacity-building for public affairs engagement.
  • Proactively build systems to strengthen internal engagement and manage communication flow effectively across the organization and mentor others to take ownership and execution of these initiatives.
  • Provide oversight and management to communications volunteers and interns as needed.

External & Strategic Engagement (30%)

In collaboration with the PIH Liberia Executive Leadership Team and the Policy and Partnerships Department:

  • Support effective donor stewardship and partner engagement by providing writing/copy editing, design, and photographic support for donor reports and strategic communications documents for external audiences, such as visually compelling PowerPoint presentations, infographics, and maps to highlight data-driven stories.
  • Provide content development support, such as written narratives, photographs and videos, for PIH case studies and success stories in key program areas, including but not limited to the Impact Initiative, clinical, and community health programs.
  • Develop and maintain standard templates for business letters and slide decks, including a regularly updated core deck with approved data points and key messaging on priorities.
  • Develop and maintain a network of journalists and contacts at regional media outlets—including print, digital, broadcast, and radio.
  • Support teams in external engagement through content-generation and other communications requests as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, preferably with digital content generation and strategy, branding, marketing-communications, and/or PR with global health or International Non-Governmental Organization in a rural, resource-limited setting.
  • Passion for PIH’s mission and interest in global health equity and social justice.
  • Proven ability to produce high-quality content for diverse audiences by collaborating across departments, countries, and cultures.
  • Proven ability to build relationships with a range of stakeholders, both internally and externally to the organization.
  • Willingness to engage respectfully and professionally with a diverse group while achieving results.
  • Demonstrated experience managing, and meeting, multiple deadlines.
  • Detail-orientated approach to content creation, with excellent planning and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to self-motivate and implement new communications initiatives with minimal oversight and direction.
  • Excellent photographic abilities, including familiarity with Canon DSLR and/or mirrorless camera systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office365 programs with exceptional PowerPoint skills.
  • Demonstrated eye for graphic design and proficiency with Creative Cloud applications, including In Design and Photoshop.
  • Excellent command of English, with superlative writing and editing skills.
  • Willingness to live and work in a rural, resource-limited setting.
