POSITION SUMMARY
The global graphic designer is a creative and detail-oriented visual communicator who plays a key role supporting the design needs of PIH’s care delivery sites in Malawi, Liberia, and Rwanda. Through strategic, high-quality design across print and digital platforms, the global designer supports programmatic, fundraising, partnerships, advocacy, and global marketing and communication efforts. The ideal candidate brings strong layout and typography skills, the ability to translate complex ideas into clear, compelling visual communications, a flexible and collaborative mindset, and the ability to track and manage multiple work streams. With guidance from the Art Manager and Senior Manager of Global Communications, the designer collaborates across multiple site teams (working closely with the Site Communications Leads) to create a wide range of materials and supports in upholding global brand alignment.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DELIVERABLES
Creative Execution (90%)
- Design compelling print and digital visual materials that engage diverse audiences—including patients, staff, high-impact donors, and prospective supporters—while supporting site-specific priorities. Key projects may include newsletters, annual and impact reports, social media posts, brochures, one-pagers, posters, presentations, and internal documents, among others.
- Work closely with the Senior Manager of Global Communications to manage multiple concurrent projects across three site teams, prioritize competing deadlines, and proactively adjust workload to meet shifting organizational needs.
- Create clear and engaging illustrations, dashboards, infographics, graphs, and charts for both academic and general audiences.
- Design high-quality deliverables for events including visual branding, digital promotion, and exhibition materials.
- Ensure brand and messaging consistency across all visual communications by applying established visual guidelines across all physical and digital materials.
Design Support (10%)
- Collaborate and communicate effectively across cultures, departments, and time zones by clearly articulating design choices, actively listening to feedback, and building strong working relationships. Work closely with the Art Manager as well as Site Communications Leads, writers, multimedia, and programmatic teams to create high-quality deliverables that are on-brand, on deadline, on budget, and meet stated goals.
- Support the growth of a shared design system by creating templates, guidelines, and assets for other global designers and non-designer colleagues.
- Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute ideas for visual storytelling, campaigns, and audience-specific experiences.
- Stay up-to-date on accessibility standards and design best practices to ensure copy and visuals are legible and accessible to diverse audiences.
- Work with Site Procurement teams to communicate with external printers and merch vendors as needed.
- Conduct bi-annual basic trainings on graphic design principles and techniques for interested local comms staff to help support this function globally.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Fine Arts, Multimedia Design, Communications Design, or a related field.
- At least 5 years' professional experience in graphic design or a related field.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating a broad range of professional print and digital design work, including strong skills in layout, branding, and typography.
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, specifically InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
- Familiarity with Canva, Figma, or similar design tools.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent deadlines across different stakeholders while delivering quality work on time and within budget.
- Excellent and exemplary interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with culturally diverse staff across departments and countries.
- Experience working on design projects for nonprofit, international development, health, or other mission-driven organizations will be an added advantage.
- Experience in illustration, infographic development, or data visualization will be an added advantage.
